Re: HAVING A GOOD DRINK
A great idea, there does not seem to be the same social aspect of drinking in public houses in Australia as there is in the UK? I have never been yet, but i would or will miss the Friday night down the local or Saturday night out on the town. Its one of the great things about the UK; in every community there is at least one pub, where you can go in, and at least meet and chat to either a friend, neighbour or the landlord any time of the day.
Thats one thing i can not fathum out, why is beer so bl00dy expensive in Australia in bars? Is it tax or just greedy bar owners? Witherspoons would clean up over there surely, there is nothing worse than an expensive pint, someone is obviously reaping the profits, is it the tax man? |

many seem to go to the RSL where the drink is cheaper. We joined the local one but ours is right on the beach with a fabulous view out to sea. My husband and his mates spend friday night there Oh and they also have rugby there live
Whats an RSL? Also, why is beer so expensive, no one seems to answer? Is it tax or the high cost of water in Australia?;) |

Sounds like you have a great RSL.

The other reminded me of a school dining hall, smelt of the cheap overcooked cabbage they were serving, and had formica tables, and dodgy flourescent lights. The beer was extremely weak and tasted watery and probably also was suitable for a school dining hall  I'm sure there are great ones around, but those two have really put me off! |

I've been to two - one was full of screaming children running around the tables, and a lot of drunken blokes yelling loudly at the TV. Booze may have been cheap, didn't stay long enough to find out!
