Just wanted to know if anyone has been using Skype to ring Home, or another Country. If so how did you get on. Just downloaded the basic version and that seems to be OK.

Skype to Skype is always excellent. Skype to land-line (via Skype-out) was eratic - particularly when calling a mobile - sometimes excellent, sometimes dire. Got better results with Gizmo, but that's very much a niche product compared to Skype, so is only of use when calling landlines, not PCs.

Tried Skype but prefer www.voipcheap.co.uk as it is better quality and free to phone UK/Australia from PC to phone.

My OH uses it to talk to he mother in the UK - I hate it - much rather pay for the call and use the phone. She has no problems with it apart from it annoying the t*ts off me.

Despite the comments of some I find skype very worth while to use and saves loads on the phone bill IF THE WHOLE FAMILY USE IT NOT JUST SOME... .

Does the people using/having Skype have to be on broadband?

Cheers

Yes, almost certain you need some kind of Broadband speed to make Skype work.

We used it on dial up here and on broadband. You still got through on dial up but your voice was slow motion.

We have only been here 3 months but talking to people who emigrated 10 - 20 years ago who phone home religiously every week/fornite/month.....was conscious that i DIDn't want to get into that routine...as then its expected from you (what if you want a day out!!! :scared:

So we just use webcams. We have one - grandparents have one (obviously they need pc) We both log on then just chat away. We went on yesterday - nd the kids can show them the easter eggs they got or anything they have bought. It's great fun - and grandparents feel they can still "see them"

OBVIOUSLY....there is the downside!!!!! You are usually in your pyjamas....they usually are too!!

then there's the comments "you're hair needs cutting!" or "has little **** had his hair streaked!"

oh well...wheres that number to sign up for SKYPE!!!!

Happy Easter everyone....Lj xx

We use skype. It's right, everyone does have to be on it, but we find that skyping the landline to say "go upstairs and log onto skype" costs about 1p! The webcam is great. My Gran (80 something) was at my parents house yesterday for Easter and we spoke to her over skype with webcam. She was so impressed she said she wanted one! Although she is still a little confused by the time difference and seemed shocked we were sipping wine - at 10pm here!

We use Skype all the time. I origianlly started using it with my work as its great for international conference calls on the PC at no cost.

We use Skype to Skype for friends and family who have broadband and a VOIP phone/headset, SkypeOut to call friends and family in the UK that aren't on Skype and SkypeIn to provide us with a UK phone number so friends and in particlar elderly family members can call us without having to worry about dialing an international number (as they actually dial a UK number and it routes through to our Computer)
