Only compliant and conditioned consumers let this kind of store stay in business eg your average Australian
Yeah...about 12 months ago i was looking at buying a new camera, shopped around the internet and found it for around $600, so on our way we called in the local HN to see how much they wanted........$899. I told them i was on my way to buy it for $600..and they matched it and i got a 4gb sdhc card as well.

God knows how much they make on the mark ups......so the message here people is never pay what it says on the ticket..

Sorry just remembered another example, looked at a bed at HN which was ticketed at $4395 + $50 delivery....drove around 5 k's to Sleepys and got it for $2000 cash with free delivery, work that one out !!

But this isnt just Harvey Norman, its Australia. Everythings negotiable here because the mark ups are usually ridiculous.

Regarding HN customer service and knowledgeable staff ... Why do I see a branch of Dixons in my mind's eye? They probably don't exist anymore ...

I will not shop there purely because that Harvey guy is clearly a dickhead.

Not Dick Smith, Dick Head.

My family also refuses to enter a Westfield shopping centre but I'm no fan of shopping so no loss ...

But what are they going to put in the Angus & Robinson, Colorado and Harvey Norman shops when they are empty?

There already seems to be plenty of charity outlets.

HN is unlikey to go bust but will slowly stagnate. Colorado will probably be taken over. Book shops are another matter and borders has big stores.

I reckon cheap crap stores will takeover but Westfields will have accept rent reductions.

I noticed when in the UK last year that Dixons are now called Currys Digital - I'm not sure if this is for all Dixons? Nothing has changed though: they still have crap service, zero knowledge, high prices, obsolete stock etc

In Perth, the A&R stores have closed but Borders has stayed open. Hope it stays like this. I noticed last year in the UK that many book stores had closed

My insider info says that more Borders closures are coming...and some 'surprising' stores will close. Could also be total bollox of course.

The other thing I heard is that the current deal to gift card holders will end, I think on Monday, and gift card holders will join the rest of the creditors. Again, could just be gossip spread amongst the staff.

There are signs up in the Perth store saying that gift cards will no longer be accepted from 3rd April. I'm friendly with some of the staff there and they reckon that the Perth store is one of their most profitable, so hopefully will stay open

I didn't know that the gift cards thing had been announced...would've expected it to make the news (maybe it did)...I'm sitting on a $50 one.

The message I got was that the reasons the closures might be surprising is because some of them won't be the stores staff would expect. Profitable stores could go.

I'll have a look.

What I heard people with gift cards were doing actually was chatting up people in the queue who were paying cash/card, giving them their gift card and books to make a single purchase and therefore not having to spend twice as much!

Last weekend they were doing any 4 DVDs for $100, including box sets...as long as the full price of each item was under $100! It's a fire sale.

My local store also has virtually no magazines other than ones they can import from the US - that used to be a thriving section.

I got 2 carrier bags of books for $2 from the local school fair last week ... loads of cricket stuff, quite happy I am.
