Growlers....Craft beer at supermarket prices
Australia finally coming of age when it comes to real beer. Growlers are now going to be distributed by Dan Murphys. Growlers are bring your own containers and fill up from the barrel from a range of small breweries around the Country.
You purchase a 2 litre refillable Growler and when it's finished go back to Dan's or a range of other stores around the Country and refill.
More info re Growlers here.

Murray's Ales in Nelson Bay NSW also do this and while fun I don't find it particularly cheap. Thunder road works out at $3.20 a stubbie or equivalent of nearly $20 a six pack.

Loads of local home brew shops already offer the service & quite a few micro brewers will brew a beer of your choice for you. You just show up to bottle & cap it. I've tried a few, the Guinness is very tasty, as is the Pale Ale.
No cheaper than buying a slab from the bottle shop though.

Good to know, cheers. I'll be giving that a crack at either DM's or home brew stores.
"Growlers" is a colloquialism with rather unfortunate connotations attached though, at least as far as my vocabulary extends to! Fill up your growler...hmmmn...

Into Two Dan Murphys down here now.... Richmond and Prahran, so hopefully they'll be in others soon.
I dont think we have Tap King in Melbourne.
BTW best bargain for craft beer I've seen is at Costco, 24 hand crafted beers for 50 bucks... Imported from American Brewers.

I used to do my own "growlers" but I'm into kegging nowadays
I currently have a Fullers ESB 6% abv fairly respectable clone on tap made with Simpsons Maris Otter malted barley plus Brewers invert sugar, and UK hops (Challenger, Fuggles, Northdown). Fermented with Fullers London ESB yeast to their fermentation schedule (18° - 22° for a week then drop to 10° to clear for a week before casking).
60c a pint
Like they say, as a hobby it beats stamp collecting.

That looks pretty damn good Mike
My Qld BiL does a very good job of making spirits, with his "Pure still" 67 to 80 pct alcohol and wooden barrels for producing and ageing Bourbon, Scotch and Rum.... Next time I go up there, I'm going to study exactly how he does things.... An Electric blanket in winter is a must apparently.
