GPS do you use it?

GPS in the Uk is good and works...GPS in Dubai doesn't work because there are no postcodes, so much construction and half the roads don't exist on it, and if they do you are always sent down roads that turn into sand....and then get stuck...you kinda need to know where you are going first which defeats the point here....;(

I know Oz is not the UAE but if you use it anywhere esp Sydney does it work well, is it useful and is it better to buy a tom tom go type separate and install in a car, or to get on already in a new car? (thinking cost point of view)..

Yeah, it works OK in Sydney apart from the usual right turns that you're not allowed to do...

I'd get a Tom Tom or equivalent so you get the most up to date maps, etc...

Yep Tom tom works well for me in Qld - Brisbane/Gold Coast areas.. use it everyday for work. Good prices on them now, around $280 on special recently.

Apparently you do have to watch out in the bush - there were reports of people having to be rescued because the tomtom took them down fire trails that their cars were not equipped to deal with. City driving no worries.

With the latest Tom Toms you can update the maps yourself so you can fix things like that as you come across them. You can also accept amendments made by other people.

We have two Tom Toms and they have been invaluable....

Mine is great for around Adelaide. It did once take us down a dirt track which we were a little concerned about, but it did save us a fair bit off our journey. :D

Yes I have a new LC 200 and have Sat Nav in it. Mind you its more use to me 400 kms from the nearest letter box than post code.

We use it on and off depending if we no the location and also to remind of fixed cameras for speed and redlights, although unlike someone we know I don't jump red lights.

Hi plantpot, we use tomtom in Australia, it's fine. Husband drove from Queensland to Western Australia with it and didn't have a problem. He's bought Garman for UAE though as no maps on tomtom. I hope it works okay, otherwise I'll be up the creek, the kids are gonna be late to school for the first few weeks.

A Tom Tom was the first thing we purchased on our arrival in Sydney, after spending about one and a half hours looking for the shopping mall 20 minutes' drive away.

Seriously good investment.

We bought a separate one because we had hire or courtesy cars for the first 3 months.

Couldn't live without my Tom Tom, although sometimes it doesn't recognise certain roads but thats only because they are so new and building highways and housing developements that cross some of the old roads.

Did you get offline maps free off nokia, when I looked on the site the other day it said you could but then didn't seem to link to them?

Garmen should be fine, only thing is if you go further than a few kms away sometimes the roads are shut and you have to do a u turn and that is not recognised...did I mention that u turns are perfectly legal, and it would seem everyone using their mobile phones whilst on roundabouts ?!! Oh and I didnt mention when you queue on a one lane lead up to a roundabout someone always drives up on the sand and tries to crunch your wing trying to get in front....yea..that and dont leave a gap between your car and the one in front unless you want three vans with too heavy loads and 4 Nissan Sunnys in the gap....indicators are optional, in fact they are usually left on...and hazard lights are used in a random way...

Oh yea, use your horn and don't EVER gesture with your hands or fingers....a friend nearly ended up in Jail for the night because she yelled and did a finger gesture that offended someone who cut her up on the HARD SHOULDER, she got off because she was connected to an important embassy....;)

....apart from that you will be just fine...

Thanks everyone else for replying...GPS it is then....
