Question Good eats in Melbourne?

off to Melbourne (for the first time) to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Got the hotel (on Collins St) to baby sit, so with this rare bit of freedom, where would be a romantic/good place to eat out.

Hi mate

After proposing to the other half down in Melbourne we went to Donovans restaurant on the beach at St Kilda. All I can say is it lived up to its reputation and more. Great view overlooking the beach and ocean (make sure you ask for a table next to the windows although they do book up early). Not the cheapest of places but well worth it in my book.

Sounds a bit more romantic than when eventually my other half asked

I've heard good things of the following:
Ezard at Adelphi
Veu Du Monde
Taxi Dining Room
Flower Drum

Eaten at all of the above and excellent - Flower Drum is Chinese, Vu Du Monde is French (no menu - you tell them how many courses you will eat and what you don't eat and they produce a menu accordingly. You can either have it with wine or not - each course quite small - we usually have 5 and then desert) Taxi is Japan(esq) Also recommend Donnovans, upstairs in the Stoke House (both next to each other in St Kilda or Botanical in South Yarra)

All of the above are expensive but well worth the expense for a special treat.

PS also very good is upstairs in Grossi Florentino (sp?) which is in the City Centre.

Theres quite a few restaurants on the waterfront just a short walk from Collins Street. They were all pretty busy when I went but managed to get an outside table at one of them. Cracking porterhouse steak....

thanks for the suggestions - however given the short notice, places suggested that I fancied going to were all booked up

So made the hotel do some work and they came up with Toofey - v enjoyable fish restaurant for a special night out
