Well I think he gave up a lot of pension from his Job in the UK, so when he got here he wanted all that back.

I would imagine, they will be back .

Very sad , and must be emotional turmoil for them.

We met poms at a party who were going back after 2 months, reason the highest job offer he had got was $80,000 he had expected to earn minimum $200,000 a year as that was what his UK pay converted too

Blimey didnt anyone tell him that converting from a UK wage is not really a brilliant tactic? Mind you, that is a bit of a disparity!!!

Your spot on about the Northern approaches from Melbourne, especially in the summer, they've got to be some of the worst vistas into any city that I can think of.... factories, endless electricity pylons and flat dry brown paddocks. They used to have a chemical dump near Tullarmarine airport, and the stench from that was terrible.

Basically all it needs is a hell of a lot of water and some landscaping, It's a simple fix really, but a big project with lots of planting and earth shifting along the freeways.

I think a fair percentage of these cases are a classic sign of planning a move based on trying to resolve emotional issues/ possibly patching up a bad marriage or similar such things and the shock of realising what htey have done when they arrive makes them panic.
Of course that doesnt apply in all cases, but that is why a lot of people who are not happy in Aus try to tell those who havent moved yet to really think hard before leaping. You truly have to be 100% sure you are doing it for the right reasons and not trying to run away from other things.

Of course... theres also those who just hate it on the spot too

I think the area surrounding MEL airport would put me off too but I think you'd have to be very negative and unadventurous, or have other reasons, like Fleaflyfloflum suggests, not to look beyond that. A trip down the Great Ocean Road should be a condition of the visa being granted.

We arrived in Singapore on a Saturday evening, never having been before, and wandered round Chinatown (our hotel was near there) looking for something to eat, finding only Chinese Medical Halls with their weird shit in the windows, wondering WTF? It got even more surreal when we chanced upon an open air shopping mall full of OAPs in stetsons and cowboy boots, line dancing. Now that's culture shock.

When I first came over, to Perth, to spend time with OH who was staying at his sister's place, I was 10 minutes in the car out of Perth Airport and just wanted to go straight back to the UK. Had I actually been migrating I'm not sure I would have lasted 10 days before heading back. This time, 10 minutes out of the airport with Mrs D, I knew I'd come home. Only differences? I was 20 years older and on the other side of the country.
