Get some formica covered chip board, cut it to fit and take to a car spray shop and get it painted a gloss, or metallic if you're funky, in a colour you like. Stick it to the wall with no nails. Saves heaps and can look ace.

Btw, my idea $10 please if you do it!

I had some glass splashbacks made up a few years ago. Had the pieces made up in laminated glass, all edges arrised with a fixing holes drilled at the corners. With it being clear glass I needed to prepare the wall behind but did that with mdf finished as the above poster suggested. It wasn't much more than 100 pounds for a piece 2 metres by 1 metre.

We used All things Glass in Wangara. English bloke called Alan runs the company. Would thoroughly recommend. http://www.allthingsglass.com.au/

It isn't cheap but looks fantastic and is so much easier to clean than tiles and grout.

We have glass splashbacks in our kitchen - and they cost a hell of a lot less than $550sqm. Another option is to go for Akril: http://www.akril.com.au/akril_range/akril_range.html which is a polymer type material. It's much easier to work with and fit than glass and looks great. It costs a lot less than glass too. We've used it in the new shower upstairs. I'll try and post a photo of it this weekend.

We picked a totally different colour for ours, our benchtop has flecks of the same colour when the light hits it. It isn't everyones cup of tea but we love it. Be brave and make a statement

Decent quality glass mosaics 20mm X 20mm on a sheet 300X300 are less than $30 bucks each, all different colours available. That's $299 per m².
I've got 2m of pale green left from a job yours for a carton of beer if you were in SE Qld

Finally took some photos - not easy to get good shots because of reflections.

Kitchen has black glass splashbacks. Bathroom (unfinished) has white Akril.

We have black white and grey mosaic tiles, from Trend Ceramics somewhere near Scarborough Beach Road (it was 3 years ago and I'm in Singapore now!). No idea how much, but can't have been that much over the builders allowance as I don'r remember a huge bill. They look great (we've got off white cabinets and wooden bench top).

Thanks so much for going to the bother. We have decided to go with the Akril. The cheapest glass was $420 a square metre but I really liked the look of the silver Akril and the price.I went to the place you suggested, asked for a better price like you said too.Firstly she said she couldnt budge but than I told her my mate got a better price she gave me $50 of each sheet.Only problem is that they dont stock the really large sheets so I have to go to Reece bathrooms for that. They charge nearly double than the other place.Im going to see if they will better the price for me.Thanks again.
