I honestly thought Rudd would wait in line & let JuLiar lead the ALP into their worst ever defeat. That would kill her off for ever & he could come back as King Kev the saviour of the ALP.
Why would you want to chuck your name in the hat at this point & be remembered for a humiliating defeat when you could wait until after Sept 14th?
Does he believe he can get voters nationally back onside in 2 months?

He'll do a lot in aiming everything his got at workers 100pct.... That is to keep knocking Workchoices and the Greens and their Anti Worker Policies.... Plus play up the fairly healthy compared to the rest of the world at least, economic situation in this country. He might even win back Western Sydney..... Assuming he gets in that is.
Other than that I do hope Turnbull comes to the fore for the Liberals.... The Unions will negotiate with him.

What assurance do you have that if Rudd becomes PM tonight and ALP wins in the election, he will still be PM after the election?

Yes, with the current polls indicating even Swan will lose his seat, things need to change unless federal Labor want the same to happen as in the Qld state election.
The best thing would seem to be for a leadership ballot, and for Rudd to win - support seems to be growing in the parliamentary party, especially with the current polls. That way Labor would likely win the election, and Liberals may decide to rethink their leader who would have now lost 2 elections. They would have noticed the polls, and maybe Turnbull will become the choice there.
If there is a leadership change in Labor, it will likely either be around June/July in time for the writ of election to be issued on 12 August if the election is to happen on 14 September (the House is scheduled to sit in June, so a Labor leadership contest could happen then) - or if it's sooner, then an election could be called earlier.
As much as I don't like Rudd, out of Gillard, Abbott and Rudd he is the least offensive.

He will have to deal with the greens if he cannot win the votes. Both Abbott and Rudd will deal with the independents to get power. Abbott would blow 1 billion on a regional Tassie hospital as Wilkie found out.

There will probably be an attempt at a vote of no confidence in parliament by Abbott tomorrow. Would be close, but Rudd should just survive it. That's the last scheduled sitting date for the House of Reps until 20 August... and the writs have to be called before that for a 14 September election which dissolves this parliament.
Chances are, the election would still be 14 September, whether Rudd is PM or Abbott is caretaker PM between tomorrow and then is another question. For Rudd to be PM, he does need to be sworn in by the Governor-General.

It was an interesting move by Bill Shorten, and a game changer of one too. The man who had so much sway behind knifing Rudd 3 years ago changed his allegiance back to Rudd for the sake of the Labor party.

Tomorrow will decide how things will flow, but whatever his personal strategy, Labor are now in a stronger position than they were.

To be honest I was looking forward to a political debate where a Welsh woman and English man, both running for the office of Prime Minister of Australia, debate who will be tougher on stopping foreigners stealing all the good jobs.
