It would be interesting to see the stats for each age group, I bet the younger people have much better skin.

Actually qlds sunday mail yesterday had 4 teens, and their sun damage, one 16 yr old had the skin age of 26. Kids go to a high with 2300 kids, not one comes out with hat or sunnies Mine wear sunblock and get teased for it, apparantly teens can detect it by smell/shine.

I see keeping it a serious thread is erm difficult.

Just once eh please!!

Skin cancer is totally preventable? I guess it is if you never expose yourself to any UV rays, easy in qld, block up your windows? car windscreen? stay in the shade, your still getting 30% + of the rays, protective clothing does not cover your nose, cheeks, neck, sun reflects up as well as down.

Once you get a few removed you realise just how far those UV rays spread, my inner big toe, an area you cant even see normally....

Anyway I am picking up son 2 from school now off to same docs with him, blonde hair, green eyes, DN already removed..... should be interesting. Back later.

Do you have a link to the thing on 'skin cancer is almost totally preventable'? Would make interesting reading.

There are two main types of skin cancer, and skin cancer is almost totally preventable.
  • malignant melanoma - cancer in moles
  • the non-melanoma group - basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, with over 380,000 people diagnosed every year.

Deaths from Skin Cancer
  • Australia = 1,678 deaths from 380,000 + reported cases : 4.4 per 1,000
  • UK = 2,300+ deaths from 72,000 + reported cases : 31.9 per 1,000

Why the lower number of Deaths, per 1,000 population, in Australia ?
Because most people have an annual skin check to try to detect sun cancer early, and then have it treated before it becomes a major problem.
Skin cancer is not almost always preventable, some of it is genetics so my doctor told me.

He also told me I would be almost as higher risk in the UK as I would here as I have 'that kind of skin', only difference here is although the sunshine pushes it a bit higher in the risk stakes, the awareness and expertise of this area in Australia makes for a quicker diagnosis.

But it is not always preventable, you do not have to be a sunworshipper either, sometimes it is down to genetics.

I saw an Aussie tennis player on the telly - I thought she was in her late 20s. I was shocked to find out that she was 16!

And then you meet Norwegian girls who have skin resembling that of porcelain....

I never stand in the sun but I get a bit from mowing. Need to watch it.

I used to get pink or sore in the UK. Never here!!

Who changed it from being serious ?
It was you that brought nit picking, stat posting, and the Moscow and Swindon sun into the thread.

All I asked was this...

The quote from the Cancer Council said "almost totally preventable"

You aren't trying to misquote me are you ? And you want the thread kept serious ? Yet you change my words to suit yourself !
