Default Flights to Oz through the States

When we go we want to head to Oz through New York and Hawaii. Qantas have a ticket which gives us an allocation of 40 kilos each but the ticket is into Sydney. We need to get to Perth. Any ideas on how we can get the excess baggage from Sydney to Perth as I presume Qantas and Virgin Blue will only have an allowance of 20 pp.

Pay the excess baggage.

Or don't take 40kilos. Do you really need that much?

Or bus/train the excess overland.

Fly Singapore airlines on an unused PR visa for the extra baggage allowance and save yourself considerable money in terms of the flight cost, not to mention the time involved of flying via the US ?

Or just use an excess baggage company for some items should you really feel you need to take 40kg each and fly a normal airline.

Sydney to Perth is another FIVE hour flight back the way you came...

Can you not book the same on one ticket with a connection to Perth? This will give you the 40kg allowance to Perth.

Alternatively excess baggage charges are not high on domestic flights. 17kg would set you back about $140 on Virgin and $170 on Qantas (the allowance is 23kg).

Booking the connection to Perth certainly seems to be the best idea, I'm sure that would work. Hawaii is certainly a great stopover on the way with plenty of inexpensive hotels, I wondered if you had any plans to stop on mainland USA because to OZ from Hawaii via New York and LAX is a heck of a trip. We stopped in LAX once, stayed at the airport Travelodge which was great, free pick up airport bus, included breakfast and all the rooms had a kitchenette, there is a good inexpensive bus service in the area, we found a leaflet at the airport.

The reasons we decided on the States is because we've done all of Asia and don't really want to do it again. Doing the States means we see New York which if we go to Oz probably means we'll not be back through that way as we have no intention of coming back. Hawaii is purely for R&R. It is a 10 hour flight from Hawaii to Sydney so not that bad.

The flight from New York to Honolulu is around 13 hours but that includes a layover in various American cities.

It is just us thinking at the moment. Depending on the house sale it may well be straight to Perth with no stopover anywhere.

Have you asked about the Qantas flights through America? We're going (hopefully) in September and our flights from Edinburgh-Heathrow-JFK-Honolulu (via LAX)-Sydney are just under £900 each plus around £300 in tax for our boy. Considering our trip via Singapore to Perth last month was over £1,000 each I think we'ere getting quite a good deal.

The 40Kilo baggage allowance may or may not be used. It is handy to hve, especially when travelling with a toddler!

Quite nice actually. Flew with JAL a couple of times. Definately Japanese but western and Japanese food on offer. Seat back TV's and good service.

Remember that on non Japan routes you could up end with a codeshare flight on offer. So could also end up on Qantas planes etc. Those flights don't give you FF miles under a lot of tickets so you might want to check as its worth claiming miles for a FF flyer program when your travelling a few sectors.
