Despite some of the banter I am resisting temptation and offer sensible advice.
Try to find the departure gate you will be departing from. Not sure which airport it is but some are huge and can tae ages to walk to find.

I've pm'd the OP the link I posted earlier too, http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6596734 - couple of years old, but there was some good stuff in there :)

Have you updated it to say "Don't take any sharp objects in your hand luggage, you'll get given these with your in-flight meal"? ;)

We got full metal cutlery on Iberia on this last trip.

Guy in front of me as I went through security at Heathrow this time had a pair of small scissors. As I went by he was trying to persuade the security guy to let him keep them, kept saying that they were his " special cuticle scissors and I need them for my feet on the flight...." I just prayed he was nowhere near me as he clearly planned to spend the flight manicuring his feet

Must admit I've never quite understood this law. If I were a naughty boy, I'd buy a bottle of something in DF, then simply smash it to create a horribly effective weapon.

LOL sorry, it is the Barbie, and to be fair, if you have to ask what to do a an airport, you probably shouldn't be allowed out on your own anyhow.

Yeah it's crazy.

Well I took my work backpack with me as HL this last trip and I forgot I kept my swiss army pocket knife in there (it was given to me ages ago).

It got through Heathrow to Joburg and Joburg to Cape Town. It was only picked up on x-ray on the way back from Cape Town and confiscated. So it's still possible to get them through.

Why? Not everyone is a world traveller. And don't forget we all had to take our first flight at some time. Did you know exactly what to do the first time you flew?

That's odd. According to site rule 2 you should now be 'barred from all further discussions'.

Try and get a seat next to the black box:) Or sit near the back, you dont often see planes reversing into mountains.:)

The first time a flew anywhere I got a seat next to the wing exit and was sat directly facing a woman working her Rosary beads so hard see looked like she was going to rub the colour off them... not exactly settling for any first flight nerves.

If the aircraft's wing shakes during flight it means it's going to fall off...

I do! Its seems hard to believe now. I was 11 or 12 years old, maybe 13 but definitely not more and was going back to school in Edinburgh from London. I caught the tube from Upminster to Heathrow and then had to go and buy a shuttle ticket to Edinburgh. This I managed but there was problem with paying a childs ticket asI recall and had to go to see a supervisor on arrival at Edinburgh.
As I say can you imagine now sending a kid off on the tube to catch a plane on their own! Bizarre.

I was 18 and on my own on my first flight. I did it all myself (aren't I clever  )

It's hardly rocket science?

Go to airport.
Check in. (Here they give you huge clues like go through security and board at gate x)
Security.
Look in shops until monitor says "boarding".
Go to gate x.
Get on damn plane.
Sit on arse for hours on end.
Get off plane.
Follow the masses to passport control.
Get bags.
Leave airport.
