Fine for not voting

Does anyone know the amount you will be fined for not voting in the election. I rung up the electoral commission and she was adamant if i didnt have a valid reason i would only get a $20 fine but everyone i have asked ranges from $50 up to $500 ($200 being the average fine). Anyone know? I will ring again tomorrow to get someone else and see if they tell me the same but in the meantime does anyone know for sure.....
Ps did a search in the threads and couldnt find the answer i was looking for

Whats your problem? I just thought some one would know the answer and instead i get smart arses with nothing better to do than wind people up. I aint on here for a joke and genuinely would appreciate a straight answer. If you dont know or cant offer any intelligent advice dont bother replying I am sure a few people didnt vote through no fault of their own so just go and start your own amusing thread. There are plenty of jole threads going if your bored!

Any more morons out there i have become bored with this (people just wanting a fight for absolutely no reason)so goodnight to you and i hope you are feeling bigger and better people for it. Oh by the way i will look out for your posts when you ask a question and tell you that it is a worthless question. Its only worthless if you dont know the answer or are you too thick to understand that? There's a question for you to ponder:confused:

did you not consider a postal vote (or what ever it is)

I know they do this over here as work friends of mine couldn't get there on Sat so voted earlier!!

Re: Fine for not voting

The answer to the OPs question is that the fine can vary or even be waived depending on whether you have a good excuse.

It has to be a very good excuse as the options for postal and early voting allow most people to cast their vote.

==================================

And I don't think anyone will question why this has become the first election thread to be closed. Grow up the lot of you.

Re: Fine for not voting

It is only $20, worth paying if you don't care who gets in & live a fair way from the polling station.
The bloke who works for me never votes as he'd rather spend the time in the pub doing something he enjoys. He lives further out bush than we do so it's more than $20 bucks in fuel for him to come in & vote.
