Fiji

Going to Fiji (one of the islands) in a couple of months with the kids (aged 6, 4 and 1).

When I've spoken to the docs about vaccinations, they say you need Hep A and typhoid.

I've spoken to about 5 families who have been there and none of them have had jabs for going there. Travel agents also look at me blankly when I ask about vaccinations and say that you don't need any.

Just wondering on other people's experience when they've gone to Fiji and whether they'd advise getting the vaccinations.

Many thanks

Heaps of friends go there all the time because it's a cheap close holiday from Brisbane, none have had vaccinations that I know of. Your kids are young so they've probably had their Hep B jabs, but if you're going to do the Hep A shot yourself, it's worth doing the Hep A/B combination vaccine.

Thanks for replying.

This is the thing. I hear of lots of people going, they all look at me like I'm mad when I say about 'did you have vaccinations?' My kids have had the Hep B. Me and hubby are up to date on the hep A (but have never had hep B). Doc had mentioned that we'd need Hep A and Typhoid. But as said, everyone who I have spoken to who have been there have never had those vaccinations.

Ain't that the truth.

We didn't have extra shots when we went to Fiji.

This website recommends the Hep A shot http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/fiji.htm. The Hep A shot alone as you know is pretty painless, maybe just get the kids done before you go and then you'll at least have peace of mind. There has been a cyclone through recently and maybe health standards might not be back up to scratch.

DDis going there in June to help underprivileged kids at a school. All her vaccinations are up to date, but we have not been told to get Hep A.
