Drop bears
I came across this write up just now. It could be useful info for those of you who have not lived in Aus yet. Perhaps those of you familiar with these critters may want to add to it?
"There was an outbreak of drop bears back here in the late 19th century, it's believed that a pair somehow got aboard a ship returning from Australia, how they survived the journey is still a mystery but it's rumoured that a young sailor who was thought to have been lost to the sea during a major storm may actually have been the nutritional source that allowed these 2 beasts to survive.
Sightings, stories and myths followed, as sheep and young cattle were to fall victim to something that the local populace had never encountered before. Remember this was back when witchcraft and evil beings were accepted by the uneducated and the villagers were terrified.
History has it that some Lord something or other (I can't remember his name now) was on a fox hunt when he and the rest of the hunt heard one of the hounds first barking and then yelping in pain.
When they arrived at the scene the dog was already dead and was being torn apart by something that no one had ever seen before... scary stuff
Anyway, this actual sighting brought about a massive bear hunt through the woods and the pair and their cubs were found and shot.
Thank god or we too might have had drop bears hiding in our trees waiting to take out an unsuspecting canine with his leg in the air..."

Re: Drop bears
Never mind the drop bears, it's the hoop-snakes you have to really watch out for. They are sneaky barstewards.

Re: Drop bears
Can you believe the guy snapped the photo just as the snake attacked... what are the odds in getting that photo?

Re: Drop bears
I said hoop snakes were sneaky. The last place you expect to see them is in a park in Sydney. Lock up your kids!
