Double Demerits

Any one know if it is double demerits this Anzac day long weekend? I was listening to the radio this afternoon and some top cop was being interviewed and he wasn't sure - although he assumed it would be.

how do they justify this?
i mean is it considered worse to speed on a bank holiday than say thursday ?
or is just another we want more brass at the weekend like the petrol companies ?

Greater volume of traffic, many towing boats, camper trailers & caravans, holding up the folks that want to be there quicker:rolleyes:
Many of the serious multiple fatalities have occurred over public holiday weekends.

Believe that? Me neither, lets stick to more cash in the coffers excuse;)

At Easter I made the mistake of driving down to Sydney from Brisbane.

We left on the Thursday before easter. At 10am I was cruising gently through what I assumed was a 110kmh zone at 111kmh...

A Police car coming the other way went past (I thought nothing of it) then practically pulled a handbrake turn to spin around and chase me down.

Apparently it was a 100kmh zone (but seriously nobody could keep up with that many limit changes! and there was no logical reason why it couldnt be 110kmh).... and for 11kmh over the limit I get 6 points and $197.

Had I committed the same offence in Qld it would have been 1 point! :frown:

I have made the decision never to drive to NSW again and never to give NSW the benefit of my tourist dollars.

Thats crap.

More of the hysterical reporting of fatalities occurrs over public holiday weekends.

I dont know about NSW - but last xmas I did a bit of digging about QLD stats. QLD last about 360 people on the road last year - thats an average of 1 per day. Of teh xmas 'target period' of 10 days the death toll on QLD roads was around 11 (i.e. almost exactly in keeping with the statistical average). I've pulled these numbers from longterm memory - so they arent exact - but the gist is correct.

Holiday periods are no more 'dangerous' than any other period and yet the police response to them is completely out of proportion.

Roads like the Kings Highway from Canberra to the coast are dangerous (crash casualty rates nearly double nsw average http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kings_Highway,_Australia ) on long weekends due to large numbers of nutters all racing to the coast for a few days... double demerits is a good reminder to slow down and drive safely.

OK point taken - but I still think losing half a licence for doing 70mph on a freeway is a bit rude.

you'll get your points back eventually ... and a healthy suspicion of nsw police too .. which isn't a bad thing

Each State has different rules on this.
