just to be difficult, there will still be 16 legs, no matter how many of the legs are tied up.
but if you place the two spiders together and did the race, there would be 12 legs.
4 on the far left, 4 on the far right and 4 in the middle(the eight legs from the two spiders in the middle tied together).

12 makes sense if the 8 legs in the middle are tied together in pairs. When I said 9 I thought the 8 legs in the middle were tied together as 1

Well in the tradition of pointless threads this one rates quite highly I think the answer obviously differs depending on how many legs are tied together.
Bloody thing would have been well dead by now if it were here.
