When she goes for a walk she can walk of the lead and comes back when called but and it's a big but, if the door, gate or window is left open she's off!! She won't come back until shes ready or caught. I would dearly love to be able to open the front door and go into the garden with her just pottering around like I see so many other people do. Our biggest worry is that when she's charges out of an open door like some kind of lunatic that she will run out under a car. It's not like she doesn't get enough exercise or attention cause she does. Any suggestions.

yea, had her done as a Puppy. I've only ever had bitches (find them much more affectionate) and always have them spayed. I know if I had a dog that had pups we would end up keeping all the pups as well :scared:

She may be getting lots of exercise but I think she's probably a bit mentally under stimulated. This isn't a reflection on you more that you might need to shift your approach to her slightly.
GS's are working dogs and are at their best when they're working. It might help you if you could play more around the house and garden and involve her in some sort of agility dog club locally ... for her sort of breed, it's much more mentally stimulating than just going for a walk. You could set up a few jumps in your back garden easily, with a few low planks and a long tunnel from a children's play shop such as the Early Learning Centre. It's fairly uncommon for your sort of pup to run off because they are so territorial. Usually!
You could also look for a police training dog course if they have anything up your way ... those are usually run by police dog handlers in the evenings. It would also give her a bit of fun socialising.

Do you know where she goes when she runs? It could be she's off to find more mental stimulation ... going to see children or a shopping centre...

Another idea is to get her a playmate... she really could be bored even if you're giving her lots of attention. These dogs like to use their brains!

You could also teach her to follow scents and set up a game in the garden ... find the smelly sock under the flowerpot sort of game... .she'll love this.

She would also be happier when you're out walking playing with a frisbee or something else which is going to test her agility and skills...

Give her lots of toys to keep her busy.... esp good for her would be the ball you put the treats into and she has to get it out by herself... once again, using a bit of brain to get what she needs. If you do give her toys, make sure you rotate them so she keeps interested all the time ...

There are other reasons for escaping, such as separation anxiety (but it doesn't sound like she's that anxious or fear where she's freaked out suddenly by a loud noise. You could get her a dog cage which is her 'room' and where she'll feel secure in. It also might help to place her in here after a strenuous walk if you want to do things with the door open! I don't recommend a lot of time, but they're useful for securing her if she is prone to escape.

I don't know if you scold her for running away but once again, when she's busy at home, keep up the rewards and treats for normal dog behaviour so that she wants to be with you.

That's all I can think of for now... HTH.

Thanks for talking the time to send such a detailed reply. I tend to agree with you about mental stimulation. She does love her toys and playing constantly. I must admit we have both had dogs all our life's and both say she is definitely the most demanding but worth every minute. I have just done a quick search for local classes for her and have got a few numbers to ring so hopefully we'll get some help with her. I know she will just love it when we get to Aus and she gets to play on those wonderful dog beaches. Thanks again.

Dog breeders run in the family so I guess we're quite 'doggy'. I do think that there's nothing better than a well trained dog though....they're a real delight to be with then.

Tomorrow I am off to a rescue place and I will be getting my dog ... come hell or high water.

LOL - I'm just about to go. Got to get the children first. Half day at school. But we are on a pup mission.

The beagle can't be released until Monday but if we can't bring one home today we'll put a deposit down. I am in love with the german short haired pointer, but I don't know how we'll fit her in the car!!! But then, she's only 6 months old .... she's small at the moment. Maybe my hub won't notice her getting big.

Catch you later.

oooooooh I'm so excited!! hehehehe

Well I had my two round to their new kennels yesterday! all booked in for their holidays next week!

Took a walk round the 5 acre fully fenced dog run - dogs LOVED it. got 2 dams (slightly dry at the minute!) and loads of falled trees to jump over and birds to chase! Was VERY impressed!

dog are also getting trained whilst they're there.... doing their obidence level 2, so we'll see how they behave when they get out.

Anyone looking for a kennel in brisbane should have a look at this one!!

I have got her! She's a German Short Haired Pointer, called Emma.

She slept in the car all the way home on my daughter's knee. She's very grateful to be out of the pound I think. She's met the cat once and barked etc, so she's going to need some training.

She walks really well on the lead, stops at every sniff and won't walk on if you won't let her smell, and she's got a beautiful nature. She sat for treats several times whilst we were out tonight.

I haven't got access to my digital camera at the mo, but here's her pic from the site:

She's asleep on her dog futon in my bedroom at the mo whilst she settles in and the cat gets used to the idea.

CONGRATULATIONS !!

Prepare to be loved as you have never been before : I had 2 GSP's in the UK & they bond intensely with their owners. Great family dogs. How did the hubbie go with her arrival ? He won't be able to resist that level of adoration for long.

2 tips from me - get her used to being alone from day 1 as GSP's are particularly susceptible to seperation anxiety, & work on that recall - they sure do like to get their noses down after a scent !

Welcome to Australian dog ownership - a whole new ball game from the UK. I'd strongly recommend that you invest in a book called 'Holidaying with Dogs' - it's only a slim volume but probably contains your holiday destinations for the next few years ! We've had some great places out of it.

Good Luck !Post us some pictures when you have time.

Thanks Miss P. She's certainly very affectionate. I haven't had a pointer before but she's very eager to please

Hubby came and met her and was quite happy with her. He knew I was out getting a dog. I think that he is a little concerned she's going to be bad with the cat, but that's just down to training her to get on.

Thanks for the tips. I will get her a pup cage this week so she can get used to us going out. I'll break her in gently with us leaving the house. I think she'll settle in just fine.

The beagle was a beautiful boy but I couldn't resist the pointer. They're supposedly excellent with children.
I'll find her some socialisation classes as she's anxious about other dogs right now. Not surprised really as she's been in that pound for a week.
