Dog Lovers tips please!!!
Hi
Right we have a gorgeous 16 week old labrador who is good as gold at home rarley jumps up sits stays you know basic training!!! But........ when we go walkies (daily) and we bump into anyone with or without dogs she goes mental im talking barking jumping backflips(well almost) not visciously just soooooooooooooo excited its a nightmare. At the minute i try and keep her close and distract her which was kinda working but this morning walked her to the vets and once inside OH MY GOD she went nuts could just about hear what the receptionist was saying!!!She really takes absoloutley no notice actually dont even know if she hears me!! To be honest I thought she would grow out of it but the receptionist at the vet said that I should take her training for socialisation as she will get worse rather than better I have rung around and have booked into a school which i dont mind obviously want a well behaved dog just wondering if any other dog lovers out there have any training tips or advice!!! Wonder if the journey to Oz will cure it?!!! just an after thought!! Cheers Kris xx |

When another dog approaches and your dog starts barking, don't shout at her, dont speak, to her when you shout, you are enforcing to her that there is something to bark about. Get your can of pebbles and throw it away from you so she doesnt see you doing it, and throw it hard to the ground. She must not associate you with the noisy and unpleasant stimulus. This should momentarily shock her out of barking. Calmly pick up the can and carry on walking. When you approach a dog, dont tense on the lead and dont say a word. Anything like this will act as a signal to your dog that there is another dog to bark at. Also try other diversion tactics such as a squeaky toy/favourite toy when another dog walks by and when your little pup manages to walk by another dog without barking, you reward her with praise and treats. You may need to start of with keeping her a good distance from other dogs and build her exposure up. Its lack of socialisation and I agree, the best thing is puppy training. You might want to check your local vet and see if they offer what we call 'Puppy Parties'. She is at a critical socialisation period and how its handled at this point, can have an effect later on. If you know anyone with a puppy that may be able to visit your house and she can play with in the garden, then that could be a start. Good luck. |

Bailey our 4mth boxer was just the same ;)
I find anything to do with food works with her. I always have a pocket full! Havent tried the method Sam suggested but might give it a try if she plays up!! Shes still very young Im sure she'll soon get the hang of things :D Got any pics?? :D |

I was going to suggest that fab woman on CH4..its me or the dog I know she has a book out which may have helped but I reckon Sam has got it sewn up for you..!!!

However, chocolates are renowned for being absolutely barking mad (excuse the pun!). Really...anyone I know with a choccy lab says the same thing!! Has she been spayed? Mine was a bit scatty for the first year of his life and used to do the most bizarre things in public, but I attended classes with him...and then our vet advised us to see a dog psychologist which we did. Anway the diagnosis was that he was a pure attention seeker and would do anything to attract anyones attention! The classes and the psychologist were great...I'd really recommend them! Start the training as soon as you can because they younger they are the better. When are going to Oz? Seem to remember you had your visa recently??? Rachel |

Cheers Kris xx At 16 weeks tho she needs to play with other pups, its part of their development, if you start at a training club it would be easy to meet other doggie owners with similar age dogs. |

I used to get hold of Bachs rescue remedy in the UK from the chemist, have a go and see if you can get it over here, a few drops for you and a few for your bouncy pal and you may just get a decent walk.
It tends to calm you down, can be used in dogs and is an old trick with dog trainers with hyper dogs! Jenny |

Meeting other dogs used to be absolutely impossible but it's calmed down slightly recently (they're 2 & 1 now). I can only say that it gets better with time. You must socialise her as much as you can, especially with older, calmer dogs who will tell her off for being so boisterous. My Molly only learned to curb her enthusiasm when a my friends huge boxer let her know that her behaviour was out of order. Just make sure that you can trust the other dogs not to attack your pup. Ignoring the behaviour and distraction techniques can be of help too. Have you got Gwen Bailey's book "The Perfect Puppy", loads of really great info in there.
