Been here nearly seven years, and I am just having a clear out - the pile to go to work and be shredded is four feet high  and at least 2/3 is stuff that came from the UK - bank statements, utility bills, rental agency references, proof of payment of final bills on leaving etc, none of which have ever been looked at or needed.

It's very worrying. We have just cleared out a load of stuff and shredded it. Although we keep all of our very important docs together in a safe.

We have also scanned in most of our important docs in colour e.g. marriage, birth certs, passports, drivers licenses etc... so if the paper version get destroyed, we at least have a trace.

I would get rid of less important stuff like payslips older than a year or two. Bank statement history going back quite far can now be downloaded from internet banking.

I'll definately scan onto disk the most important stuff too because we're shipping most of our stuff and you never know, it might end up strewn along the south coast . Just remember to re-copy all of your electronic media onto new disks every few years or so to preserve their integrity.

I'm finding that having to go through all of the filed documents at this stage - four months before emigrating is proving to be a good exercise. I'm uncovering old accounts, etc that I'd long forgotten about. Also loads of issues that need to be chased up on/clarified.

Yeah we have mutliple copies here on our laptops and Network disk plus we have an FTP site where we upload to, so we can download any important docs when needed from anywhere in the world (with and internet connection of course).

Haven't done copies to cd/dvd yet, but will also download to USB keys to take with us in case laptops break or get stolen etc...

I was too busy having fun so flunked school completely. It took many (20+) years to catch up and begin to realise my true potential.

Sorry to hear that. If you don't mind me asking, how did it affect you?

Not us directly as the MIL is still alive plus I have a brother but we wrote to John Howard at the time outlining a few things and immigration replied stating that S, E, I & W were treated as separate countries. I posted that on here a good while ago now but was told I was fibbing! Just wished I'd kept it so everyone could see!

Hi,

I work in IT & IT Security. When you login to your FTP the username and password is sent in clear text. So anyone monitoring the connection will be able to see this username and password. You will be surprised about how many organizations your connection to get to your FTP site. If they wanted they could login and get your documents. Also if anyone dodgy who works at the hosting provider might be able to see your documents.

If i was you i would create an encrypted container file. That way they cannot get at the files should they get into your FTP site. I would use TrueCrypt it is free & a good product. This is the website http://www.truecrypt.org/ - Here are some documents on how to use it. - http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=tutorial

Anyway if you want to know anything please don't hesitate to PM me :)
