.

Agree with all that. Our dentist over here is excellent, our previous dentist in the UK was a sadist . . . although she did accept NHS patients.

It would appear that Australian prices may be cheaper than UK Private prices, but obviously not cheaper than the NHS.

But in the UK you can get private dental insurance. Ours used to cost about £300 a year for two of us and it covered everything.

It is not available here.

Jan 10 in UK bro was paying 450 GBP private for a crown, my crowns here are more like $1800 each. I am not sure what he got back on his Private cover, we got around $750 here but only allowed one of those claims a year.

Dental exam and clean for the kids last week was $156. Items 012 114 and 121, that includes a flouride treatment.

What isn't available here ?, you make it sound like dental insurance isn't available here, to the average reader.

Dental exam and clean for the kids last week was $156. Items 012 114 and 121, that includes a flouride treatment.

Scheduled prices in QLD

Item: 012 $40 to $72 Oral Exam - Periodic
Item: 014 $47 to $96 Consultation
Item: 121 $35 to $110 Topical Remineralising & Plaque

Total of between $122 and $278 depending on dentists.
So you did OK on your $156 price.

But on the $1,800 crown, that depends on what type it was. The cheaper Gold crowns or the Porcelain ones,
Item 615: Full Crown - Veneered - Indirect $1,199 to $1,807
Item 618: Full Crown - Metallic - Indirect $1,099 to $1,766

Some undated prices from the USA, showing the price differences between the options for crown materials.

$810 to $1,500 All-ceramic dental crown.
$775 to $1,350 Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crown
$730 to $1,350 Gold dental crown
$660 to $1,200 All-metal dental crown - non-precious metal

This shows some of the differences to be aware of when comparing crown prices.

It surprised me that my porcelain crown is more expensive (and better looking) than my gold crown.

Can you get dental cover on its own, not as 'extras' in a very expensive hospital plan?

Grayling did say dental cover that covers everything and not the usual fracking around with schedule fees, gap payments and the like.

That sort of policy, I do believe, is still not available here.

Didn't think it was... otherwise I'd have it and ditch the extras from my medical plan.

I have one of those insurance policies that you have posted and their cover is very limited.

In the UK it covered the lot

And the scheduled fees are not necessarily what your dentist will charge, so you will have to pay the gap.

Re: Dentists down under

:confused:I had the pleasure of visiting the dentist last week - I need two fillings and an extraction (a wisdom tooth I dont need as there is no opposing tooth) and I got quoted $759.00. ($285.00 per filling and $189.00 for the extraction)

I also paid $108.00 for a sinus x-ray to show I have a sinus problem (yes i already know that thanks :frown:).

Last time I went I paid $230 for a check up, scale, x-rays and a flouride treatment.

I used to get all that for 45 quid on the NHS. :(

Should I get me some insurance with dental extras? Is there a waiting period? I cop the medicare levy too so it might be worth it now? What say you BE'ers?
