2 bed unit rental : $400+ a week, expensive, very low vacancy rate, especially in dry season April-Nov.
Commuting : own transport, no rush hour traffic.
Job : depends what you do, construction, engineering, most trades good for the forseable future, also government positions OK. Finance, IT go elsewhere.

Don't:
walk about by yourself after dark, drink drive and expect to get off with it, swim in the sea, expect to buy designer clothes in shops - you wont get or need them, ask a local when the 21st century is starting, tell a local you love crocs, drink XXXX or VB.

Do : appreciate the way of life, be glad your not in Sydney, go for a pub crawl on Mitchell St on a Sat night and wish you were 22 not 42,:( , realise its the best capital city in the country, buy a boat and experience world class fishing on the doorstep, have a weekend in Singapore cheaper than Sydney.

$2000 a month might do, probably not.

You can still rent 2 bed unit for less than $350 a week. As for transportation, there is a fairly good bus service in Darwin. I use it.
