Tell me about it! My nice quiet 4am cup of coffee kind of went by the wayside! From midnight it went very fast from just a Coastal Wind Warning, to Ocean Wind, and then straiht to a cyclone, no warnings even of th Low in between. It also built so fast that the Bureu were still plotting the first possible track while on the phone, and even then it changed b the time the advice came out.
Back on shift tonight, and I see its been down graded to an ex-TC already, but I personally think it will re-intensify fairly soon.......Certainly worth a close eye.

Its an odd season. The Bureau have said its developing late, so we may be in for a few cyclones/lows yet which could push some weather down the coast.

Updates.

Ex-TC Neville may re-intensify back to cyclone strength before hitting coast(currently expected late tomorrow/early Monday). May then cross Cape York Peninsula into the Gulf, after that who knows.

There is another Low building in the Coral Sea, prognosis unknown at present,, so watch this space.

Don't know about Brissie but whilst you were enjoying the cold and snow of England, we had shedloads of the wet stuff for a couple of weeks from Christmas onwards. Definitely need more obviously and am wondering where it is but what we had wasn't bad. Last I heard it was likely to be one of the driest summers for a while and last summer was bad.

My FiL's name is Neville. Lovely lovely man, very gentle and kind but I think he'd laugh like a drain if he see's the cyclone's named after him

Plenty more to come for you yet - hope its a big 'at or you'll have a very wet mane! Rainfall figures last night were going up very nicely, might have been a late start but at least the rain finally arrived.

Does Brisbane ever get hit by TCs or is it mostly up north?

Bit too far south for much of a cyclone, they usually become a low again before they get down here, but we do get the effects sometimes.
The 1974 floods were the result of Cyclone Wanda, for example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970%E2...yclone_seasons

Thanks. I was getting worried for a while there. Hadn't considered that possible danger before in Australia.

We were in Orlando Florida (2008) on holiday when tropical storm Fay hit.

Don't really want to re-live an experience like that again.

Welllll, not wanting to worry you, but we do get a fair amount of nasty weather in Brisbane. Not actual cyclones, but nasty all the same. The Gap in Brisbane was hit by a microburst in November 2008 - there are threads on here about it, plus if you google "the gap storm 2008" you'll find lots of pics.
Many of South East Queensland thunderstorms are amazing - and destructive - with deluges of rain that have to be seen to be believed. Have a look through my old threads on here as I've posted a lot on storms and cyclones (they are my job and its a fascinating subject). This year has been very quiet so far, hardly any storms yet.

http://www.bom.gov.au/announcements/sevwx/ has some interesting events on it.

The ultimate BE cyclone thread was Bix's about Tropical Cyclone Larry - worth a read if you haven't seen it.

TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 2
Issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane
Issued at 11:07am EST on Saturday the 23rd of January 2010

A Cyclone WATCH has been declared for coastal areas from Cape Melville to
Lucinda.

At 10:00 am EST Tropical Cyclone Olga, Category 1 was estimated to be
490 kilometres east of Cairns and 495 kilometres northeast of Townsville
moving west southwest at 22 kilometres per hour while intensifying.

Tropical Cyclone Olga formed in the Coral Sea overnight and is currently moving westward towards the coast while intensifying. Gales are not expected on the east Queensland coast within 24 hours, however gales may develop late Sunday as the centre nears the coast.

People between Cape Flattery and Cardwell should consider what action they will need to take if the cyclone threat increases. If you are unsure about the
actions to be taken, information is available from your local government or
local State Emergency Service.

Emergency number advice - If you find yourself in a life threatening situation you need to ring 000.
If you require help from the State Emergency Service (SES) then you need to call 132500. - sandbags, tarpaulins etc. Please bear in mind that this number may well be very very busy, depending on the impact of the cyclone, and if you cannot get through please keep trying.
Emergency Management Queensland and the District Disaster Management Group are maing as many preparations as they can. More info here - http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/content...ne_advice.html
