TROPICAL CYCLONE INFORMATION BULLETIN
Issued at 11:03am EST on Wednesday the 17th of March 2010
At 10 am EST Wednesday, Severe Tropical Cyclone Ului [Category 4] with central pressure 950 hPa was located over the north-east Coral Sea near latitude 13.8 south longitude 157.8 east, which is about 1230 km northeast of Mackay and 1360 km east of Cooktown.
The cyclone is moving south southwest at about 4 kilometres per hour.
On Friday the cyclone is expected to turn west-southwest and begin moving closer to the Queensland coast. On current predictions the most likely scenario is for the cyclone to impact the Central or Capricornia coasts during the weekend. However, it is important to understand that some uncertainty remains in these longer term forecasts.
The windy conditions over much of the Queensland east coastal waters will
continue.... swell are expected to gradually increase along much of the Queensland east coast and produce dangerous surf conditions on the exposed coasts.

Anywhere from Cairns down to Mackay should be keeping a very very close eye on this one.

Lots of experts are tipping the Mackay/Rockhampton area for a crossing, which would mean the effects being felt quite a long way south.

I'd actually go further south than that and say anyone down to the Sunshine Coast - if the system hits with the intensity they are predicting (possible Cat 4) it will bring a lot of wind and rain affecting the coast a long way down - especially as so many areas have had so much rain lately too.

Apparently Heron and a couple of the other islands nearby have been evacuated now so it looks like they're battening down the hatches. Major shame for the students who would have arrived on Sunday.

Heron Island is self-evacuating as you say - it not an official evacuation, more a precaution by the resort itself, and Lady Elliott is following. Makes sense - get people out before it gets to the last minute and they are fighting the rough seas.

Re: Cyclone Season......Queensland - TC Ului
out of Brisbane should be fine, the Hervey Bay one might be a bit more doubtful - depends on the track, and on the damage after it crosses.....

Check out this from New Zealand's Metvuw service.
They've got it clearly hitting the Rockhampton/Gladstone area from Friday morning then sliding down the QLD coast and dumping a load of rain all over SEQ.
