Cyclone Season......Queensland - TC Ului

Re: Cyclone Season......Queensland - TC Ului
Heron Island is self-evacuating as you say - it not an official evacuation, more a precaution by the resort itself, and Lady Elliott is following. Makes sense - get people out before it gets to the last minute and they are fighting the rough seas.

Check out this from New Zealand's Metvuw service.
They've got it clearly hitting the Rockhampton/Gladstone area from Friday morning then sliding down the QLD coast and dumping a load of rain all over SEQ.

He is right in that we don't have any cyclone watches or warnings current, but bearing in mind the fact that it has been such a quiet season for cyclones in Qld a lot of people aren't prepared at all, even in cyclone-prone areas - no batteries for radios, no tarps, no ropes etc. I will admit to not having seen much media coverage over the last few days - off work so no TV -but a bit of advice to be prepared can't go wrong.
No-one knows where or if it will cross, but by the time we do know it could be too late to rush out and get supplies, or evacuate, in the case of the islands. Heron and Lady Elliott don't evacuate at the drp of a hat, for example, far too costly for them. That particular news report also includes advice from the Local Disaster Management Group, and from one of EMQ's Regional Directors - they aren't in the business of scaremongering, and certainly the RD has a wealth of experience behind him, very skilled guy in the disaster management field.
Be interesting to see if Mr Weatherman has to eat his words.......

The techie threads are fascinating though, watching how weather sstems are actually built up and developed.
Lot of good forecasting and different models on the main site too, can spend hours poking around on there!

I'm not at work till the end of the week (just in time for the crossing!) so my powers are a bit limited at present......
Might be an idea to have an alternate route south planned just in case.
Welll........totally personal view here, yes he does have a touch of Michael Fish about him.

They are aren't they - I can't get over the number of people in the general TC Ului thread (and other cyclone threads in the past) who are almost praying for a cyclone to hit their towns so they can "see what its like"
The techie threads are fascinating though, watching how weather sstems are actually built up and developed.

I have to say that being a 'storm chaser' always seemed like a fun thing to do.

I think his point was that it is irresponsible to panic the entire east coast when the cyclone will only cross in one place, and have an effective radius of only a few hundred km. I think he's right on that. The news agencies have been failing to point out that currently no one know where it will hit, and until then no one should panic.

A lot of the reports you see in the Courier are called in by Storm Spotters - the reported size of hail stones, that kind of thing.

You can actually sign up to the Bureau to report on storms - they don't ask you to chase them, but I have to admit that appeals to me as well!

I was keen on a girl in the Met Office, I met her in Iceland. I was swiftly exposed to her cold front though.
