It was standard practice all over the place when I was growing up on the northern suburbs. (I lived in Bassendean, then Craigie.)

Even during the years 2001-2003, when I lived in Midland, kids in my area played in the street as a matter of course. :)

That's not to say that kids in the UK don't play in the street at all; just yesterday I returned home to find half a dozen scruffy teenagers using my wheely bin as a recreational device.

Crime rates in Perth. Well there pretty bad $16 an hour. Much lower than brickie rates but then thats the same everywhere.

Drug problems. Rest easy possum rest easy they're plentyful no problems at all.

Do parents let their kids out without worrying about them ........ sure some do some dont.

But the sunshine makes up for all the little worries in life

Don't you think it a little irresponsible to kid people on rather than admit it might be risky?

This was on here only yesterday:

Don't let your obsession with showing everything Australian in a good light get in the way of objectivity and honesty.

"Kid people on"? What am I supposed to be kidding about?

I only said that kids do actually play on the streets. I never claimed it was entirely safe - I assumed that most sensible people would realise this for themselves.

It's a rather garbled account, and I'm not exactly sure what it proves except that (a) bad people exist everywhere, and (b) kids shouldn't talk to strangers (as all Aussie schoolkids were taught when I was a boy, through the Stranger Danger programme.)

And does it actually contradict anything I've said? Nope.

I have no such obsession, and my love of my country doesn't get in the way of objectivity and honesty.

My advice is not to let your obsession with rubbishing Australia get in the way of objectivity and honesty. :)

Well said G. I take exactly the same cautions with my children here as I would anywhere in the world. Australia produces the same sort of perverts and misfits as anywhere else. Fact.

Obviously you are australian so obviously you get upset if it looks like your home town isnt quiet as you imagine after all you dont live here ,and lets face it areas like midland and i lived there myself and bassendean arnt what you call the best areas and a fair amount of the people frequent centrelink on a daily basis ,an thus tend to not give a monkeys about their kids especially the local indeginous ,i have seen sites here i have never seen anywhere and the one of the worst foor me personally was seeing a young lad buying paint so he could go chroming ,this lad had what seemed to be like parkinsons and paint round his nose and hands this was in midland i have had needles in my front garden on a daily basis and god forbid i found a severed head of a dog down at the kiddies park where whacked out druggies gave themselves a shot while their kids played on the slides .I have lived in both countries and i live here now and when i am at work listening to guys how to cut this and get a whack out of that im wondering what is happening to the world ,not long ago 2 of the lads went into northbridge and decided to score a hit so while jacking themselves up they past out into their land of paradise and got rolled for all their wages ,yes i find very much inyour face here a lot more than the uk nevertheless it happens there but it depends on where you live
