Pietersen has effectively confirmed it:

Offered the opportunity to douse suggestions that Swann's "heads up their own backsides" comment was aimed at him, Pietersen instead fanned the flames.

Instead of saying 'Swann made it clear those words were not aimed at anyone in the England dressing room' - a reply he could and should have given - Pietersen instead replied: "There's a lot worse things I've been called."

If England can put up a decent showing in this test maybe all is not lost for a series.

Well, obviously all IS lost already but ... hey, I'm trying to be positive.

Quitting before you got permanently dropped when even your best friend - who luckily is captain - can't save you from your appallingly bad form over the past 12 months.

Well done Kallis. A player unburdened by intellect.

Great record - brilliant all-rounder, but should have gone a year ago. That's why Swann went when he did - jumped before he was pushed. Kallis almost certainly wouldn't have been picked for the series against Australia.

4 down, all batsmen get starts and get out. Really poor, again.

Pretty bad last session considering they weathered a fair amount.

Not too many runs on the board either ... Ominous.

Don't forget that 4 or 5 months ago Swann finished with 26 wickets in the series, more than any other bowler on either side; hardly appallingly bad form 'over the past 12 months'.

His recent form may have not been that great, but I doubt that he would have been dropped. Just as Pietersen, Cook, Anderson, Swann etc should not have be picked on current form, but are, then the same applies to Kallis
