confused carpenter

Hi All,
Myself, wife and 2 year old twin boys are due to re locate to to Aus. in July of this year from Edinburgh, Scotland.
We just recieved our visas 2 weeks ago since starting the migration process approx. 1 year ago. We are going on my job which is carpenter. My wife is a Hairdresser.
Originally we liked Perth as everything about it was very apealling:) but after a bit of research, the house prices were high compared to previous research and seemed there wasnt much work for carpenters.
We then turned our attention to Brisbane as seemed to be lots of work and the areas seemed really nice with lots of affordable housing etc, however the house prices have gone up quite a bit over the past 6 months or so, to do with interest rates etc.
We very much like Brisbane but the things we keep worrying about is:
Will we be able to afford to buy or even rent property,
Is there alot of work and is it reasonable pay,
What areas are good to bring up children,

We briefly looked into Adelaide, the housing was more affordable but we felt alot of the properties were a bit run down and there wasnt as much opportunities as Brisbane had to offer. We are so confused as you hear so many different stories positive and negative. Thanks in advance for your reply.:)

Welcome to the forum.

Shite , talk about leave it to the last minute !!!

My advice, go to either Perth or Brisbane , rent affordably for 3 months, see how it goes... if no good try the next place.

I mean you have travelled 13,000 miles so another few wont hurt.

However, I would opt for Brisbane.

Brisbane house prices are still at the cheaper end of aussie property, compared to perth melb and syd they are still very good value considering the size of the city/region you are getting.

Work - any tradie coming out now needs to be aware that the construction game is slowing, housing starts are down, interest rates are up. From what people say on this forum perth has slowed compared to here, but that seems to have increased the amount of tradies arriving in SE qld there is a fair bit of competition for jobs.

You really need to see each place for yourself what appeals to one will not appeal to another. Also try to imagine each city at its various climate stages all year, too often you read someone banging on about the weather based on a short reckie.

Out of the 3 you have mentioned there is little doubt brisbane is the biggest area - as in things to do, places you can visit, areas you can access etc, a big factor IMO if your easiy bored.

Brisbane hands down mate! Good city, close to Gold and Sunshine Coasts (beaches), nice suburbs, plenty to keep you out of mischief!:p

My husband is a chippy, we were originally going to Perth but ended up on the Gold Coast :) He works in Brisbane, he got the first job he phoned up after. Work is good, traditional carpentry but the money isn't so fantastic. Seems on a par with what others are earning though from what I've read on here.

It's a struggle with the rent as ours is quite high but we're getting by ok, and loving it here of course :D

I think house prices are high here too. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else though.

Although I have to say Perth is beautiful, just depends what you want

Good luck!
