common misconceptions of Oz
 

Over the years, whenever I've mentioned to people I'm moving to Australia the always make the same comments.

1) Everythings so cheap in Oz.

2) The wages are higher

3) The houses are REALLY cheap.

4) You get loads of land with the house.

5) All Australians love the British.

6) The education system is so much better than the UK equivelant.

I'mn sure I'll think of some more, but I can guarantee that whenever I sayI'm going to Oz one of these will be mentioned. Does everbody else find this?

If anyone thought all of the above applied to OZ they would be in for a rude awakening.

1. Everything is not cheap!
2. The houses might be a bit cheaper but they are not so well built as U.K. and in many areas they are so packed together you feel that you can feel quite claustrophic and not necessarily a lot of land unless you buy in rural areas or out of the 'city' areas where most of the work is.
3. The Australians are however very friendly and welcoming.
4. Can't comment on the education system as don't have childen but ....

I think the move to Australia can be quite a culture shock for many and it does take getting used to but having said that if the desire to make a go of it is there, then it is a beautiful place even if very different to Britain. I would never put Britain down - it has a lot to offer but you take things take for granted when they are in there in front of you. I think a move should be taken very seriously before the final decision. Good Luck when you take the 'jump'. It is worth a try!:)

Some, but not all. Most o fthe houses I have looked at on the real estate sits you would be hard pushed to wheel a bike between one house and the one next door :unsure:

People seem to think you get 2 acres :huh:;)

In the UK lots of houses don't have a GAP between one house and the ones nextdoor!! I think it's fair to say that average houses in Australia are bigger than the UK, and have larger yards, and are cheaper compared to UK prices (if not compared to Aussie salaries).
We've been here almost two months and I can safely say that EVERYONE we have met has been very friendly and welcoming, not one incident of nastiness so far.
Of course some things are pricier and some are cheaper - my favourite without a doubt is petrol, which I can't help but think of as being half price!
I'm sure there is so much variety in the education system that comparisons are meaningless for individual cases, but I think there are advantages and disadvantages, and parents have the most important input anyway.

3) The houses are REALLY cheap. erm yeah but they are shacks

4) You get loads of land with the house ..well you can if you want to live in middle of nowhere theres one up for sale here with 100 hectacres but I wouldnt fancy taking the bin out.

5) All Australians love the British.. cant speak for the Aussies but the Tassies do ;)

6) The education system is so much better than the UK equivelant .. dunno bout this.
