Only the best, they have a couple of spare rooms usually.

I'd agree with the lowly rating for Paris - I stayed at a 3 star hotel and a 4 star one, which were tiny, cramped, poor facilities, not very clean and oh so expensive. I've stayed at some nice hotels in London - 4 or 5 star, and they are much better. However, in my student days I've stayed at really grotty ones too, so I guess it balances out. Perhaps people come with overly high expectations, which then lowers their satisfaction levels.

Totally agree with Paris. The hotel we stayed in was a death trap just waiting to happen.

No fire escape doors, just a realllllllyyyyyy old lift that could fit 2 people in and a small suitcase! The lift actually swayed when you got in! You could feel it moving fro side to side! It was that small my wife had to go in first (send the wife in first to test it out :o;)) and then I had to go second with our suitcase. The look on my wife's face when I got to the top  Not impressed.

The bedroom had foam tiles on the ceiling (always a sign of class, not!) and there were actually foot prints on the ceiling ! And also various stains, god knows what they were!

The first thing we did was open the window and looked out on to the street and there was a French bloke pissing up against a car in the street  Again my wife was not impressed

Needless to say we spent that majority of our time out of the hotel!

Yep, the French have a very interesting view on what a five star hotel is.

I stayed at the Meridien in Noumea, which is supposed to be a 5 star hotel.

I've stayed in some cupboards in Paris too that they tried to pass off as 4 stars.

The reality is, the French just have a different tollerance and level of expectation from accommodation than the rest of the world. Then there is their renowned customer service, which is non-existent.
