The mossies are still here but we only get them for a few of the hot months. Saying that I got bitten on the leg 5 weeks ago and it wasn't particularly hot that day;)

I react badly to them so Canberra or somewhere like Canberra really suits me.

Thanks. That's reassuring. :)

I notice that everyone seems to winking in regard to hot/cold weather in Canberra. Is there something that I don't know about it that perhaps I should?

My daughter went down to Canberra on a school trip last year, we had to buy her a whole load of new clothes suitable for a new climate. She didn't have those things. Gloves, jumpers, jackets etc...

Mozzies can be a pain, I was very badly affected by them when I was "new blood" (...they can tell the new arrivals).
Aussie BBQ'ers always like to invite a new British migrant to the BBQ, they keep the mozzies away from everyone else

Not too much trouble now I am a local though...

Well Canberra has some real hot, dry summers. Dry winters too. I think that because it gets cooler in the autumn/winter months and most people come to Oz for a sunny/hot lifestyle all year round. I would hate that - so Canberra suits me.

To make it perfect for me here I would have it rain more - but that is all.

Take today - it was 6 degrees when we woke up this morning. We haven't yet had to light a log fire so far this year and we haven't re-set the air conditioner to heat yet. won't be long but still keeping warm inside (good insulation is the key).

It is now just after 11 am and warm outside - think it is only 18 but warm and not breezy. Most winter days here are sunny and warm - sometimes it gets as high as 23 in winter days - but the nights are cool/cold. I like to wrap up and snuggle in front of the log burner.

All in all Canberra has loads more sunshine than lots of places out here. And a lot less rain (never thought I would complain about the lack of rain):)

Gloves?? I haven't worn a pair of gloves or a scarf since coming here! I have rarely worn a coat too and I am going into my 5th winter.

 but you have to remember, up here, when it drops to about 20°C, the word "freezing" begins to get used......

:rofl:OMG - your blood must have thinned out.....I still walk around in teeshirts and no socks in winter....I seriously haven't worn a coat for yonks though - infact the coat I bought out with me almost 5 years ago...was taken back in 2007 to the UK for a visit (thought I would really need a coat there) and I left it behind as I had too much luggage to come back with. I haven't replaced the coat yet - just wear a chunky cardigan when i go to work

Hahaha! I like the bit about inviting new British migrants for BBQ's. So perhaps my wife and I should be careful if we experience an initial rush of Australian hospitality

Thinking and talking about weather differences is interesting, and maybe informative to some people.

Take the word "Freezing" for example...

In the UK it means ? I can't remember properly, but probably ice on the inside of windows, car engines freezing up, etc ?

In Canberra ??

In QLD, when the weather turns "freezing" (in the sense it is often used) we need to consider wearing long trousers, and long sleeve shirts etc.

So, consequently when a QLD local, who is really 'freezing' at say 15°C during the day, is heading to a place that goes down to 10°C, or less, during the day, well, they don't have a word for that level of 'perceived' cold....

:D

Amazes me that the shops here sell woolie hats, gloves & scarves etc and the kids clothes are all fleecy! wtf is that all about?

That sounds good. The sunny dry winters remind me of the years that I spent in Johannesburg. Sunshine is food for the soul. Rain? Well at this stage I don't think I'll miss that.

It's been really dry and sunny around London this last five days. I've just checked the weather forecast for the weekend. And guess what? Yup, heavy rain is forecast for both Saturday and Sunday

If everything goes well, in December. And if I manage to get over there, I'll be happy to try and oblige with the rain (but for a short time only!). :)

I know some teachers there who moved into the ACT system because the NSW points system in a pain. They are moving into middle agedom so say they are getting used to the quieter life. Lack of variety is their biggest issue but Sydney is 3.5 hours away off peak.

There are a lot of public servants and the place is very WASP middle class.
