Can you generally change flight date without charge?

Hi, i am considering booking an airline ticket for June from the UK to Oz.
If i decide to change the date of flight for any reason, is it generally free or would i be charged.

I know that Etihad would have allowed me one change free of charge when i flew at xmas, is that generally the norm or does it differ airline to airline?

Cheers

Not sure of others but Emirates charge £75 per person, per amendment. I believe it is most likely standard practice and that Ethidad are an exception. Best to check terms and conditions online or ring and ask operator.

Depends on the individual conditions on your ticket - the rules vary according to the class of ticket, whether it was in a sale etc. It should either be on the original booking confirmation or the itinerary. If not you will need to ring the airline.

That depends on the class of the ticket. Most of the cheap ones you would have to pay extra. Check when you book.

The more heavily discounted the tickets are, the less flexible they will be. You pay extra in part for the ability to change itinerary.

IIRC there are 4 or 5 booking "events" for each bum that actually gets to cover a seat - part of the reason for overbooking. Providing flexibility costs money, so it has to be passed on somehow.

We did it for free on Emirates and others on here have been charged £140 by them, so I don't think there is a "standard" fee.

There isn't. As above it depends on the rules attached to the particular ticket tat was bought originally.
Generally, the cheaper the ticket, the less flexible it is.

We chose the £65 option with Singapore Airlines. There was no 'free option' to be able to change flight dates.

Hi
My 17year old nephew changed his return dates because he was missing his girlfriend a few weeks ago, Emirates changed his booking free of charge but said if he changed it again there would be a £75 fee

My sister flies out to us in Brisbane in May with Emirates, my husbands been offered a promotion in Perth, now im wondering whether theyd allow my sister to completely change her booking

No they most likely wouldn't allow that.

Cancellation & rebooking might be the best option - the fee will be higher than £75 though.

My dad changed his flight details at the last moment [when he arrived at the airport to leave] He wanted to stay for 10 days in Thailand instead of just 24hrs. Thai Airways were extremely helpful & there was no extra charge.
