On a similar note:

When we get to Oz eventually I was wondering what to expect in relation to car expenses

Road tax?
Insurance?
Diesel/Petrol cost?
Yearly MOT? or similar?

The following is true for Qld - I'd imagine costs in other states would be very comparible.

Road tax (a.k.a "Rego") - (approx) including CTP insurance
$590per year or $310 per 6months on 4cyl car
$710per year or $372 per 6months on 6 cyl car

Insurance(non-compulsory)
Assuming full no claims(65%), good driving history and over 35
6cyl 3yr old Camry (value ~$18k) = ~$400 a year

Petrol/Diesel
Diesel currently around $1.10 lt?
Petrol between $1.05 and $1.30 depending on DAY OF THE WEEK <-- this *will* drive you up the wall

Yearly MOT
Not required....(hence expensive second hand cars as old cars never die.. so retain some value)

Out of interest, what are the bike costs?

Can full-no-claims be transferred from a UK insurance company to an Aussie one?

Diesel is around £1/L here so about half of that in Oz :)
Rego seems a lot higher than road tax and Insurance seems about the same as it is here.

Bike costs have been:

$3500 Bike itself (2000 ZZR250 11,000km)
$ 500 training and licencing
$ 700 protective gear (helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, jeans)
and ongoing costs of:

Insurance $200 a year (old git, low powered bike, full no claims)
Rego $200? per 6 months
Fuel economy 3.5L/100Km
Servicing $300-$500/5,000Km
Tires $300/pair (8-10,000Km? I'm guessing!!)

The way I look at it - for my commute it works out ever so slightly cheaper than the bus, more reliably than the bus, about a third the journy time of the bus and a heck of a lot more fun!! :D


I'd try getting a letter from your UK insurer, otherwise heres a BIG tip:

look at nrma for insurance they determine your no claimns discount based on whatever you decalre your 'number of years driving without claiming' to be rather than 'number of years held valid insurance without claiming'. They are a more expensive insurer than others - but not 65% more!!! I used these guys for 1 year to get an insurance history with a full NCD - and then switched to a cheaper insurer!!!

If everyone used the search facilities and found the information they wanted, then this would be a Web 1.0 site. AS IN a static website where you came to look up stuff.

Its not. Its interactive, its a forum, people who cannot be arsed looking/searching, ask questions that have been asked before. I include myself amongst the 'cannot be arsed' group. And in that interaction, learn more snippets of information, that other users who can be arsed to search will find later.

Now stop being so grumpy, and just answer the question,

Dunno - that'd vary from state to state. Regulations on bike licencing are wildly different.
