Bushfire fallout.
 

Well, looks like the first major public protest against the handling and way the bushfires have been received will be in Melbourne this Friday. Could be 10,000's there.

I think it's needed to try and force some kind of detailed inquiry as to the reasons behind all of this.... From the Green aspect and their rules about clearing one's own properties.... the way it's been handled, right through to climate change, man-made or not. It probably is worthy of a Royal Commission, although this country seems overloaded with those inquiries,

I think there is a myriad of reasons behind this current event. However, one glaring fact remains. This massive fire was predicted way back in 2008 with the Garnaut climate change review. To the point that they actually got the year exactly right.

As long as it encompasses the main cause of these fires, arson, then I'm all for an inquiry.

Yes, unfortunately...... it also happens in California .... should have a mandatory life imprisonment sentence for anyone convicted of this crime.

Also make allowing underbrush to accumulate a crime, with separate offences for land owners, and government bodies i.e. those charged with policing effective underbrush management. I would like to see penalties in the range of 10 years to life depending on the severity of the consequences. .... Loss of one life or ten homes leading to a life sentence.

It happens everywhere and always has done. It's not a shock that the fire brigade has moronic arseholes in its midst.

Yes that certainly needs looking at as that seems a highly contentious issue. I wouldn't have a clue about how many of these fires have been started by Arson. It certainly needs a forensic style investigation with claims from some that it's been overstated. Obviously there should be none, and the penalties should reflect the damage caused.

For want of a better expression, the whole terrible event needs to be looked at in intrinsic detail in the cold light of day.

For instance, fires thought to be arson in Victoria in the past have turned out to be hot exhaust pipes parking on overgrown roadsides. There have been other reasons fires thought to be arson turned out not to be.

I'm not going to speculate on numbers/dates etc, but certainly some of the recent fires in Queensland have been confirmed as started by arsonists, others are possible arson, and open source media has reported that Rural Fire volunteer/s have been charged with fires that have occurred over the last 12 months or so.

Yes one of the consistent trends with the fires over the years has been fires started by firefighters mostly the volunteer ones, however, there have even been professionals charged in the past.

There have been quite a few cases of fires claimed as Arson with people even arrested here in Victoria in the past that have subsequently proven not to be. That is where a person has seen to be parked on a verge for instance, then a fire starts where the vehicle was parked, which has turned out to be a hot exhaust pipe or another issue. That has definitely happened in Victoria on quite a few occasions now. The people where you work will know about this I'm sure.

This is why we need a highly detailed inquiry into these events.

We see a lot of fires started by cars pulling off the road with hot exhausts, we also see many where there is a crash - either single or multi vehicle, and a fire then results, spreading to surrounding grass. Then there's the fag-out-of-the-car-window idiots. I'm not including those - Im referring to "real" arson -we have had a fair few cases this season where people have actually been observed deliberately lighting thefirea, and in some cases they have been arrested for it.
