I agree with you, Polly. About 5 years ago or so it was a very divided forum. Things now seem to be much more civil and with less cliques. Sure, some of us have made friends and share in-jokes, but it's a lot friendlier than things were a few years ago.

Probably 'cos I've calmed down a bit in the last few years. I used to think it was great fun winding people up, these days not so much. I can't believe I've been here since '02 (earlier in fact, I used to post on usenet). I've wasted my life.

No, not wasted. You've kept me entertained for the last 8 years. And yes, you have calmed down a bit. I chalk that up to your advancing age ;)

It's still my favourite forum. I post on others but I don't feel part of it like I do here. I would give the majority of users here my last $1 if they needed it and even though I have never met many of the people that post here I do feel like they are my friends, albeit it cyber ones.

I left Australia fifty years ago (yes!), and am now an Englishman with a British-EU passport living in a British colony in the Caribbean. But I'm always interested in how immigrants in Oz are faring, and BE seems to be quite a welcoming forum.

I would imagine that the person who said that was unused to forums!

Some people don't read their own posts before they share and can come across as completely not what they intended, a few love to wind these people up and some just don't suffer fools gladly.

yes occasionally it can be a bit intimidating at first hence last say the pub and the 5 word thingy it gives people a way to join in when they can't think of something sensible to say.

I use it to help those who want to immigrate, the same as I was helped, I use it as a trip to the village to stop and have a chat and a laugh to hear what other people are saying and sometimes to have a ring side seat at a witty fencing match.

Like all gatherings of people there are some I don't think would like me much in person but it takes all sorts to make a community and we all seem to rub along ok in the end. If not the mods are there to stop the nastiness.

I like the fact that there are many different kinds of people here, some I would never get a chance to meet in real life it's great

Amazingly no, he is a prolific forum user but I remember his time on here and his nonsense didnt go down well so didnt last long.
As you say the mods put a stop to the nastiness pretty quickly which is good.

I think the posters are more likely to be angry over their lot in life than the mods. To be honest, this migration lark seems to create a forum which is nastier than any other forum I have come across - not so nasty - more that people seem to be disadvantaged/angry/peeved/marginalised - people tend to really respond to all sorts of things that get them going just when you least expect it. Post a argument(which is nonetheless well documented and has a strong case to answer) and someone will suddenly get hot under the collar about their lot in life. There are a lot of posters who are basically quite miserable, I think.

I visit BE for the range of opinions. If otherwise, I would have left many years ago.

Yes the not liking Australia was a pretty bizarre comment, as expected it is just the opposite.

You should do a poll... Is BE more cliquey now than it was in 2008 ?

I don't think it is... A lot of old timers still keep their hand in here simply because it IS friendly, familiar, what they grew up with... You can pop in for a coffee and bump into a familiar face....

Ok, it gets a bit silly in the Barbie sometimes...isn't that the whole point of the Barbie? I usually get pissed and have a laugh at barbies, why should the BE barbie be any different?

if people ask sensible questions in the appropriate area it's still the best site for expats, And the best source for information and support... Both on getting here AND getting back when you are over it.

As for the comments allegedly made about BE... Sour ****ing grapes... No doubt a let's knock the competition thread gets things going elsewhere.. But the policy here to not engage with intersite shite has served BE well over the years.... Other places could learn from that example.

Meantime, the price of ammunition for my rifle in australia is so bloody expensive I no longer take pot shots at wankers as a hobby

Exactly. What happens on other forums can stay on other forums, BE does not want discussion of their threads, or of their posters.
