Re: British economy continues to slide
Something Socialism never managed.......And nothing wrong with attempting at greater wealth distrubution while I'm at it. No reason on earth why such a small percentage should have close to the lot.
Worked in Canary Wharf in the early days. What a stirile area populated by numerous to.s pots.....London paid a grave price putting too many eggs in the financial services basket.....

Didn't realise you were an anarchist ......Really Canary Wharf is an example of what is wrong in today......The Financial Sector took the country to the brink putting it in simplistic terms....and the cost will be felt for a long time...being paid for by folk with proper jobs but far less means.

London doesn't seem to be paying any price at all for the failings of the financial sector it all feels vibrant and there are plenty of jobs in my line of work. The rest of the UK however is not having such a fun time.

Wrong. The massive run up in private debt followed by private sector delevearaging is squeezing the life out of the UK economy. This is what is causing the public deficits.

Canary Wharf is still a dreadful sterile area. I can't wait to get back to the City it's far more fun working there.

People wishing for the end of the City should be careful what they wish for.

Re: British economy continues to slide
People seem to like to knock the City/Canary Wharf but for all that has happened it is still one of the the major driving forces of the economy, half of all jobs created in London in the last year are connected to the financial sector and London is still the envy of the financial world along with Wall Street. In the coming years London with have to fight hard to retain it's place, strong competition from Asian centres and the growing bitterness of France/Germany.

The City can't create money out of nothing, for every winner there's a loser. So they all get paid fortunes to shuffle other peoples money around.
yeh we'd be devastated without them

yeh, but all those jobs rely on fees, charges etc that they take out of other peoples pockets.

Real money however, nope. And when reality comes calling, that's when it goes bad, fast.

Exactly, and a very substantial amount of those fees are derived from overseas.
The City controls 40% of all trades on the Euro, not bad for a country that is outside the eurozone and much to the dismay of the French.
As for the poster who claimed they all get paid fortunes you are so very wrong. Most are just normal hard working people doing there best to provide for themselves and there family. If one day they end up making good coin then bloody good luck to them.
