Cool BrisVegas - What's that all about?

I know this has probably been mentioned on here before, maybe not...
But why oh why is Brisbane referred to as BrisVegas?
I mean, to me it looks nothing like Las Vegas, not that I have been there or anything, but I really don't get the connection.
Just pondering the reason why, to waste some time and all that kinda jazz....

I think it's a reference the ephemeral showy nature of the area, as opposed to more thoughtful chin-stroking areas such as the Hunter Valley.

I have walked past there on many an occasion, but after a horrific experience at the casino in Melbourne, where in anticipation and excitment with all my saved up coppers dieing to go beserk, I got stopped at the entrance by two 'battlers' who demanded to see ID as I did'nt fit the bill. I was like 28 at the time. I have never felt so humiliated, and have not stepped foot in a casino, or even a bingo hall ever since.

I do think Sydney is more showy then Brisbane, so I just don't gerrit.

It's a sarcastic dig that was coined back in the 1970s when Brisbane was, shall we say, quite a bit more slow & backward than it is now. The term has been affectionately adopted by most of the locals even though the city has in fact certainly "grown-up" in the cultural & excitement stakes .

On that note I was there in '86 and returned last November and I didn't recognise the place. I do love it though.

A grotty little farming town in New Zealand called Ashburton (population 1 million - sheep) has likewise been given the nickname Ashvegas.

Hmmmm

Cheers

hahaha, I find the whole Brisvegas thing as amusing as if Blackpool was being compared to Las Vegas! It is such a typical Ozzie term thats for sure.
