I know where you're coming from. My kids are along way off all this (they're 4), but I think everyone should get some experience of travelling and open their eyes a bit. On the other had, you just have to teach them to be careful and not do anything stupid.

I'd love my two to travel a bit partly because I never did and I think it's a good way to experience life. But as you say, the teaching is a big part. No matter how sensible a person is in late teens/early 20's they still think they are invincible and that nothing bad will happen to them.

Hiya Pen how's it going?

Our daughter is 17 - just a couple of thoughts:

1 I'd love her to go travelling - just so we don't have to deal with the day to day stuff like taxi-driving (she hasn't passed her driving test yet), collecting plates and glasses from her room, and washing heaps of clothes only worn for a couple of hours.

2 I'd hate her to go travelling - she is very (too) sociable and a bit too easily led. A glass of wine with a meal makes her squiffy, so no need for date rape drugs just 2 glasses of wine should do the trick!

3 Why can't 'young people's' brains develop a few years before their bodies?? As a parent, puberty at 23 seems about right (although I expect teenage boys with brains in their jockey's would disagree!!)
