Best place to go for extensive/expensive dental work
 

Hi, my Mrs has just been quoted $19,000 to replace her worn out dental bridge! :ohmy:

She has other extensive teeth work she needs doing and I can imagine this is going to rack up to something like $40K :ohmy::ohmy:

Obviously were going to get second opinions here in Perth but might it be cheaper to get the work done in the eastern states or Bali/Thailand or even back in the UK? Has anyone had to go through this?

Not sure if you remember her, but Seasider goes to a dentist in Singapore that she likes. I can ask her for the name if you want.

A friend of mine uses this place in Bangkok, and has nothing but praise for them.

I got dental treatment in the UK - a filling replacement - on Christmas Eve 2013 - £100 (including emergency treatment fee and practice registration), which was significantly less than the $500 I was quoted here.

No real problems encountered back in the UK if you prefer that route.

Thanks all, got a better quote in Joondalup today - $7 grand less so we'll be going with them I think.

Even with $7k less and running into the $30ks it's still a huge sum of money. I'd be looking at Malaysia, Singapore or South Africa. Not sure how much the flights to Jo'burg/Cape Town are from your end of Aus but it's surely not more than an 8 hour flight? I can recommend some SA dentists, if you're interested.

I agree with all the posters here who said to seek cheaper dental work overseas. I saved over 50% on root canal and veneers in Antalya, Turkey, and got a super vacation at the same time. The net savings included hotel, airfare and extras.

I know someone that travels to Bangkok for dental work they've saved a fortune think I might end up going myself!

Here are a couple of promising sites I've just come across. Also, Cuba offers dental tourism too, so I may go there next time, since I live on the next island down from there. (I have an appointment with my local dentist to get his report on all the things that need doing in my mouth. That may very well put the frighteners on me!)

The guy in Singapore is at The Smile Division (Dr S Ang at the Lucky Plaza branch). I've been to him 2 or 3 times and he is such a lovely guy apart from being a lot cheaper than Oz!

I had a crown done after root canal treatment in Oz. The crown was less than half the price in Oz and I had the impression enroute to the UK and the crown fitted on the way back! I've also had fillings and he even rebuilt a broken molar for me on another trip.

However, since then I've been seeing my Mum's dentist back in the UK who has connections with Oz and even he thinks Oz prices are horrendous!

I think it depends on what you need doing with regard to going overseas. I asked about implants as it's been suggested to me but it's a long process and if anything goes wrong then you'll end up seeing a local guy, who probably won't want to repair, they will want to start again and rack up the $$$$s.

The other factor is the length of stay and cost, somewhere like Singapore is great if the treatment is quick but would be expensive to stay there for a few weeks. Although people in Singapore also go to Bangkok for treatment. The dental hospital there is all set up for tourism treatment as I did look at it, they even offer day trips in your "downtime"!

The husband has just had the first bit of an implant done, he's been in a lot of discomfort, can't imagine what it would be like to have to fly home after that. :unsure:

Wish I'd known about the Thai clinic before I had a CEREC restoration done here. I couldn't believe the price and insurance only covered about $300 of it.

Dentistry in the UK's gone up a bit as well! I've just come back and had my annual check up and he discovered 4 fillings needed doing so that all added up! Still cheaper than here as one of the fillings fell out and had to have it redone here.....(lots of rude words!).

Anyway, one of the teeth to save it might need a root canal and crown so I have the UK quote, so at least I can compare to here and if it does need doing I might contact the Singapore guy as well, more fun having it done there! Just depends on timing and urgency.

I've never had so many problems with teeth until I moved to Oz, typical..although I guess some of it is age :(

I was reading the other day that there is a lot of country VIC that still doesn't have fluoride in the water, wonder if they have any teeth left.

Hope hubby's implant has settled down now Moneypenny.

Give him my sympathy Moneypenny (or a kick if he's being a sook). I had all my lower teeth out at once last year, and all the implant posts put in. Quite a bit of jaw shaving went on as well. I was not a happy camper for a few weeks.

No good sugar-coating it, it's not pleasant! But done properly, it's really worth it:)
