Haven't tried from this end but found 'Trailfinders' in Uk very competitive, including internet sites. They have an office in Sydney.

Haven't used them, but when I was pricing flights from Brisbane to London http://www.jetabroad.com seemed to have good prices.

To be honest - having done this only two weeks ago - your best bet is to ring Qantas, and pay through the nose. I had terrible trouble finding a seat - all flights booked up for 3 days ahead, and ended up coming back via Tokyo with BA/JAL.
If its for one of those horrible reasons - like mine - tell the airline why you are going, and even if they can't give you a cheap seat they do look after you. BA were appalling mind you - but Qantas looked after me all the way - offered bag carrying at each end of the journey, and were willing to "babysit" me in Singapore if I was upset. JAL were even better - upgraded me to Business Class, and kept a careful eye on me, bringing me constant wine and coffee! Made it a lot easier, and all because I told them why I was going, and that I would be upset.

I really hope you are going for a better reason than I had to, but if it is bad news, I hope this helps (plus heres a hug )

Oh dear hope everything is ok.

It may not be much help but I can vouch for Trailfinders - they were really efficient. I don't know where you're based in Oz but I know there's a fair few branches out there.

Trailfinders 1300 651 900 (local call cost) always very helpful and can save you a lot of time, often find the websites advertise stuff thats not even got seats and underestimate the taxes till your about to pay

Avoid booking through Flight Centre, fly with Singapore ... that's the best advice I've got.

Just to echo what's been said, if it's one of 'those' flights, go direct to the major airlines and explain the situation. It's the best way.
