IS IT BECAUSE I AM NOT AUSTRALIAN?????????
I have been here over 2 years, and whenever I have applied for jobs, 99% of the time I have been called for an interview. Now over the past 2 months I must have applied for at least 25 jobs and not even getting a look in. I believe they are gonna look after their own now - so just be aware if you are looking at emigrating!!!!!! Is anyone else finding this>????

An old friend of mine was a manager on the London underground during the last recession.
He reckoned that they averaged 750 applications to every job for maintanace workers.
He told me that it was impossible to read all of them so they used to reduce them by selecting all the brown envelopes or on another day White envelopes. Not nice but thats the way it is.

No.
Maybe.
Take your pick based on what you believe.

When my oldest son did senior high everyone in the class would go out and get a part time job, easy as pie, big and little employers snap up workers on $9 an hour. Middle son is now 15, only one kid in his class has managed to get part time work so far, most have dropped off stacks of applications.

Employers for the most part dont give a stuff about overseas experience. I'd say thats the main problem.
No Aussie work record, is the main issue you face.

Re: IS IT BECAUSE I AM NOT AUSTRALIAN?????????
A year ago I had 3 jobs to choose from. The one I chose was a 1 year contract with the WA government. Since the health department has been told to cut 3% from their budgets, my position has been cut, which means no contract renewal. This past month I have applied for dozens of jobs, had 13 interviews and apparently been shortlisted for 2 jobs. However, I'm still unemployed. Is it because I'm not Australian? Nope. It's because there are more applicants than positions at the moment.

Hi, as mentioned on the "unemployed" thread, only tonight on the news they said that the number of jobs advertised was down, if the doors for immigrants (for which I'm grateful) is still open then the number of people applying for each job is increasing. The time delay between the drop in number of jobs advertised and any decrease in the number of immigrants allowed in is quite long really but hey that's bureaucracy (hope I've spelt that correctly).
Though I must say as far as I'm concerned I think that if I had the chance to employ an Aussie rather than an new to Australia British person (like me) who doesn't know the system so well, I know who I'd pick. Doesn't stop me from hoping that they'll pick me.
I'm not fussy, giz a job

We recently advertised for someone and found that about 2/3 of the applicants were not Aussies. We narrowed it down to 2 guys - a Kiwi and a South African. The Kiwi got it. Go figure.

No ...
They smell the fear ...
Relax in the interview, be yourself ... you'll be surprised
Either that, or you're a complete whopper.
Hope this helps ...

Re: IS IT BECAUSE I AM NOT AUSTRALIAN?????????
I know it is tough finding a job as my Mrs and 3 other women from the school have found it near impossible to get a job, mind you they all want the most popular jobs involving schhol hours and flexible. One woman we are friends with has a part time bar job at Waneroo golf club, they treat her like shit often never phoning her and she does not know whether she has a job there or not half the time.
It is similar in the U.K but in my experience the Aussies are full of shit when it comes to work and will tell you what you want to hear, yes I will ring you Monday, we have loads of work going on e.t.c. I don't know if because you are newly arrived they think you are thick. Many other tradespeople I have met also feel the same and maybe they are like that in other professions.
I often thought about the Aussies looking after their own but there are a lot of people here that are in the position of hiring people that are not from Australia so that does not follow. Nearly everyone who has given me work has been from the U.K but I think that is coincidence.
