House is around 280 sm. Land and pool costs are on top of that. Does include driveway tho. |

The carpets were fitted and all look crap now as loose and cut in places, all the skirtings are scored by a stanley blade. The first time we got the guy out we had only noticed it needed stretching a bit and he said he would repace a bit. We then noticed the damaged paintwork he said he'd come back out and look, we then get a phone call from someone who says he'scoming in his place and when he arrives it's the fitters, I show him the scoring and he blames it on the paintwork so I tell him to go. The guy from the shop then phones and says he's told him to come and re do it all and rub down and repaint the skirting< to which I said I don't want him round as he was rude about it, we haven't heard from them since but suits me as we have only paid a third. We had a concreter round to do the alfresco and the drive, we picked yellow with brown slate impression for the alfresco and a darker grey and sandstone for the drive. The drive looked yellow and the back brown, we the found buff that had been used at the front and lightstone had been used at the back we old him and he first denied it and when finally admitting it his argument was that the brown at the back would have lookedjust as bad as the yellow at the front. He said he could seal it so that it was all one colour, I said I wasn't happy with that, he called me a whinging pom and said he was going to come back and dig it all up, I now I should have let him but we've got no energy left for fighting with people, I even offered to pay half the cost of the materials to do it again so that we'd both have an equal loss out of it, he said no because I might not like the new colour, I said well then hat would be my fault as I'd picked it. In the end I've had to have it sealed grey, he gave me $200 off but like I said I really dn't have the energy to start all over again. None of the problems with the house have been sorted yet and now one of the doors wont shut as the frame has bowed. Oh and none of the beds or anything has been put together as we can't because we'll have to move them again because of the carpet. The heating and gas cooker doesn't work properly either and they haven't returned our calls. It feels good to get all that off my chest :D Just an observation. |
Re: Back online ...........
It's OK saying we shouldn't pay if we're not happy, but often the reality is you are signed into a contract which states you pay in stages and they don't move on until that stage is paid for. And when you've had weeks and weeks and weeks of argument about this and that and this and that, then even the most strong and steadfast amongst us would eventually get worn down by constant niggling mistakes or bad workmanship.
As Fraser said, eventually the promises of "mate, we'll fix it" start to become acceptable as you eventually lose the fight left in you. And lets face it, these are things the builders are paid to do, not the house buyer... I'm not agreeing all builders and all workmanship is excellent. Neither am I agreeing they are all crap. In fact from personal experience we've had three major jobs done here, all of which when we "snagged" them...some of the work had to be re-done. But to be fair all three lots of tradespeople sorted the problems out and I have VERY high standards. Having said that I never pay the cheapest quote [cos it's NEVER worth it] and I expect the best...and to be fair, after sorting things out, we have got it. But this is three separate projects, nothing like the grand scale of a house build so we never got to having months of constant fighting.Even in UK where we had various projects, the same things occurred. But again, they were sorted. Is there anyone here who can say they get everything right 100% in their jobs? So why should tradies? That doesn't excuse shite though, but it does mean sometimes things have to be re-done. As for your house Fraser, it seems you may have got yourself a bunch of cowboys, which unfortunately is not down to you. Your builder is to blame for accepting shite standards. I find it difficult to believe anyone on here can justify it. It is NOT your fault... But that also doesn't mean all Aussie houses are built to the same crappy standards, or that all Aussie builders are crap. I can understand you are still raw and feeling mightily pissed off by it all as it's been a long and very expensive road......but maybe you need to take a deep breath and look at it subjectively. I suspect if we got the same data on UK house builds, it would show the same. I personally haven't met one single person in UK who had a house built that they were 100% happy with. I've met loads who had lots of snags, some of which were rectified, some weren't. I suspect in both Aus and UK, the building code of conduct state things have to be pretty bad before the builders have to rectify it i.e structurally unsound, and if they are unscrupulous builders, they can be right ar*eholes and Will drag their heels. That's got nowt to do with Australian standards, it happens in UK too... The reality is you've had a rough deal Fraser. I feel pissed off for you, just as I would anyone in the same position. A house aint no small project and it's usually the most money you are ever going to spend, so it's bound to be emotionally and financially draining. Just remember, anyone can get unlucky and buy a duff car. In Aus and UK. Doesn't mean only Aus cars are duff though;) |

Just an observation. If it's grating with you how do you think it feels for me. |

Just an observation. Anyone who dares say anything is shite in Aus gets a raw deal by a certain "gang" of people. No doubt they wind each other up in the background via PM's and the odd phonecall. I see it happening. I've even been an *attempted* target by some of the more stupid ones. However I choose to ignore this childish behaviour and hope the sensible grown up ones out of the *gang*soon learn it's not grown up behaviour. Hell....I even like some of them, even if I don't like their behaviour.. It's the same pattern of events. The "clique" start to pick on certain people, who either cow-tow or bite back. Then they try discredit the individual in question, or ridicule, or *tell* them off:rolleyes: A favourite tactic is to get a member to have a go at someone .....then all pile in and have a go.....it's typical clique/gang/bully mentality....and sometimes innocent bystanders get dragged into this behaviour without realising. As a member of the *gang*, you get invited to meets..or PM's or even to join an exclusive website!!!! Of course not everyone on the website is in the gang....they too are sometimes innocent bystanders..... not realising they have been taken into the fold.... Ross, I put you down as a stronger character than that, as someone who doesn't get involved in these games or the "clique" mentality..... As for Fraser, he has a view. Some of us don't necessarily agree, but it's his views non the less. He has a right to express them I reckon... Even if we disagree. |

Re: Back online ...........
This just started about the driveway and carpet and someone asked for opinions about building houses in oz to which (I think it might of been Wol) said they had a bad reputation, I agreed and so did renth, I was then told my opinion was rot I then gave the reasons why it's my opinion and I'm moaning.
To those who have supported me thank you it's appreciated, to those who think I'm moaning you should try having everything that's done going wrong for a spell of months and see how cheery you end up. This would never have happened to me in the Uk not because there aren't cowboys, but because I knew the people who weren't. |

That's the bottom line really isn't it? If only there had been a way to work out who was crap before this whole process started .... :( FYI, my FIL was appalled and said your builders needed shooting .... :o Either way I hope you get the issues resolved soon and actually get to enjoy your place, even if it is a bit wonky. |

Either way I hope you get the issues resolved soon and actually get to enjoy your place, even if it is a bit wonky. But if you pay someone to come and do a job you expect it done properly so it annoys you that you've paid these people and they haven't. |
