Is it unusual to see men using umbrellas (like you'd use if it was raining, not sitting under a garden one) to keep the sun off of them when walking around town?

No. Loads of people use umbrellas to keep the sun off. It's better than melanoma.

Thanks for getting back, glad to hear it. It might be nice to use an umbrella for a change if I get fed with putting sun block on my face.

In Perth I have only seen ladies doing it.You do what you have to do to protect yourself.

YEP, and a good wide brimmed one at that. Plenty sunblock on the nose, especially if you wear sunnies, they intensify the exposure your hooter gets

I've seen quite a few 'ladies' in Brisbane walking around with umbrellas, regardless of whether it's overcast, raining or sunny. It's a bit sad, they might as well just put a big sign on their umbrella saying ' F' off Brisbane weather,'. Why live in Brisbane then?

Pale skin historically means rich enough not to have to work in the fields. In some parts of Asia this has turned round to "tanned skin means rich enough to sit on the beach all day", which is a worrying trend, but skin whiteners still sell like crazy.

I use a silver (reflective) brolly occasionally in the sun, but I've never seen a guy do it.

My collection of hats is a sight to behold, I only carry an umbrella for rain avoidance (not drizzle, there ARE limits) and fighting my way up and down Adelaide Street.

ladies only I think.

However the partner goes to work covered by sun safety regs set by the project owner. UV 50 long pants, shirt, sleeves MUST be down not rolled up , hard hat with full sun cape ( neck ) attached, UV sunglasses and theres bulk sunblock in all the offices/lunchrooms.

Makes me laugh when poms talk of being a tradie in the great weather :blink: only bit of tradies you can see on that site it their chins:rofl:

Sons last employer here before he moved OS was the same.

Funnily enough Sal, I saw 3 sporting brollies on the way to work today in Westcourt area.

One man and two ladies who were not together but they were all Asian.

Lunchtime, no hat in car, UV 13 today (despite being V cloudy ), large silver and navy umbrella in car, reminded me of thread, walked the entire main street with brolly up.

I assumed I would get funny looks, but nope not one, have got more 'looks' when wearing legionaires hat.

Gives you a mass of shade, far better than hat:thumbup:

I hate wearing hats and so have always used an umbrella when I have to be out in the sun. :)

Don't want to appear 'picky' but holding a brolly over your head isn't going to stop you getting burnt or cancer, the UVA/B rays are still going to get you. Carry a brolly by all means, you'd still need sunscreen.

Hate carrying brollies when it rains, they're a pain in the neck, let alone carrying one on a hot sweaty day.

Could paint your brolly with sunscreen I suppose, or even silver foil. Lets face it, you won't look any dafter!

I get sunstroke ridiculously easily; they prevent that at times when I don't want to wear a hat.
