Re: Avoid North Lakes like the plague
Got to say Fatbloke has a point, one that doesn't realise from 12,500 miles away, some aspects of aussie living are very different to the UK. The shiny glitzy estates are some of the worst areas for gang violence throughout Australia.
One of the Major areas to avoid here in Melbournes north, will be Mill Park and South Morang, despite their shiny oppulance , both suburbs have mile upon mile of 35 square plus houses, little transport infrastructure (means the youths cant get around easily) and lots of families moving in of around the same age groups. It's little wonder that the once quiet old Epping railway line is now one of the worst in Melbourne, if not aussie for gang violence and unprovoked attacks. The level of youth violence in these outer suburbs, is far higher than anything in the inner city, especially where Melbourne is concerned, hard for new migrants to get their heads around, but a fact none the same. |

All I want to do is let the blow ins and dreamers know that these estates are not what they appear from the glossy magazines that the developer puts out. Spend your money elsewhere in a quieter leafy burb that is not going t have a population explosion around you and leave you unable to sell, you will be trapped. Why would someone buy your second hand house when they can easily buy a brand newie down the road!.. Think people, think. |

Or anywhere else with 'lakes' in the name (Springfield lakes etc). This is the best advice we were ever given before we made the move out here.
It seems these 'lakes' are a magnet for poms and they are turning them in to a little home from home with violence rife and gangs of teens roaming the streets after dark looking for trouble. No offence to anyone who lives there but thank god we dont. http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/s...71-952,00.html These places remind me of british council estates from the seventies and IMHO they are just storing up trouble for the future. Sorry but I have to disagree with you, it is a massive mistake to make statements about where and where not to live. My wife came from, and we both still have many friends from some of the so called "worse" council estates in the UK, so bad in fact "World in Action" made a killing on ratings from them in the 80's and 90's :sneaky: But if you were to study the statistics behind the article then it is a minor few icidents sensationlised for journalistic needs, for gods sake as it says there are 13000 people who live there, are you going to tell me every one of them will be a law abiding citizen? I don't remember reading about many stabbings, or drive by shootings, from North Lakes in the Courier Mail. Perspective is called for I think. By the way I have read it a few times don't see anywhere it states Poms are the cause of it? |

BUT 'it is a massive mistake to make statements about where and where not to live' is clearly wrong in my view ... other people's opinions of an area matter, good or bad. If the masses say it's shite and it saves someone making a mistake (or viewing the place in a different light) then this is surely valuable? Isn't this was forums (fora?) are for? |

A simple question along the lines of " what are everyones opinions on North Lakes, as I read an article today blah blah blah" This would have been a little better? Anyway avoid vegemite like the plague in my opinion :D |

Wrong, these views are not parrotedor whatever.
This article in the paper on the weekend was just the catalyst to make me act and help would be expats. I would not live in north lakes or any of the other lakes for quids. |

Look at the rich people who ended up living next door to Ozzie Ozbourne and Sharron, he knows how to lower the tone of a neighborhood. |

I think that when you scratch under the surface there are some problems it a valid point as the glossy magazine articles and tv ads never refer to that.

Re: Avoid North Lakes like the plague
Yep. If you look at the master plans for these estates they are going to huge, building for 15 years I think.
Like you said when these estates are older who will buy one of these houses on a tiny blocks of land when you can get a decent size one down the road.
