Default Australia vs Career

Why do some Australians feel the need to leave Australia to advance their careers?

22 million vs rest of world means a lot more opportunities, plus they get to travel.

Lots of people travel to other countries to get more experience, I know I did working in the states with IT developers for six months. I know I left Northern Ireland to get out from under the glass ceiling for women I felt it had at the time.

I have already sent my son back for six months for more life experience and hope now when he finishes Uni he will be travelling again or looking for at least a few years overseas working later on to give him a taste of what else is one offer.

No seriously, why does a stint in London look good on someone's cv? Why do actors leave Australia for the US?

Actually I had a rethink in 9/10 choices for me the moves I have made meant more $$$$ in the long run. And in some careers the concentration of knowledge in in one place at certain times, eg my six months in the silicon valley in California, a bit like the concentration of actors/filmmakers/druggies in Hollywood

As a child I always fancied being a tyrolean goat herder (I admit I was fixated with the rather jaunty cap). Imagine my dissappointment when I discovered the Tyrol was in fact part of Austria, and that I would have to move from my homeland to fulfill my long-held dream . . .

I don't think it's London that looks good on the CV, it's the international aspect. No different than the CV of an English or American person who had worked overseas.

Actors leave Australia for the US or UK because the acting 'market' is much much greater than here. More film/TV companies making more films/programmes mean more opportunity to get work and a step up the ladder without being stuck on Home & Away for 30 years.

If they left the UK to advance their careers they wouldn't be coming to Australia.

True, but the vast majority of us are not actors. I'm a contractor and don't believe in a 'career' as i'm mainly interesting in earning as much money as I can in the shortest space of time, but since moving here my 'career' has only gone one way - up.

Frankly when the sum total of Australian entertainment culture is summed up by Crocodile Dundee, Pricilla Queen the Desert and neighbours, you can see how someone might want to break from those stereotypes.

Maybe it's because America had a twenty year head start on establishing a film industry and Australia hasn't caught up. Dunno. Maybe there isn't a good reason why Australians leave their home country to get ahead.

A stint in London looks good on a CV because London is a financial capital of the world. Business conducted is truly international. The scope of projects are much larger, the markets much bigger and there is more money going around.

At the end of the day there is the potential to gain far more experience overseas than there ever will be in Australia.

As for Actors going to the US. There are virtually no opportunties for actors in Australia as the film industry is so small.

Australia is a good place to retire.
