Australia really is the most phenomenally overrated concept/place ever, isn't it.

Just my view - conclusively - after several years (sadly) spent here.

Add yours or bicker amongst yourselves.

Whatever you prefer.

I advise you though to take note of my wording - I said ''overrated'', not ''crap''.

You're not wrong. Gone to the dogs together with the flat cap ex-council estate Brits.

Depends who rated it and what the rating is. I enjoy it here but tend to never approach anything new with high expectations.
I think people's false expectations have much more to do with not liking Australia than anyone overrating the place.
Sadly, both my post and your own are nothing but opinions and generalisations at that.

Every third Brit thinks life would be better in Australia. They have no idea why though. They just think it. Mainly cos Aussies are so good at self-promotion. That and people's generally pathetic obsession with sunshine and big houses.

Its minus 10 degrees here right now so why can't we aspire for a bit of sunshine?:)

And what is wrong with people liking sunshine ?

Explain why you think some of us are 'Pathetic' for liking good weather ?

Why are seasons and the variety that comes with them so intolerable? Why do you need/want sun all year round?

Fifteen minutes in the sun a few days ago got me horribly sunburnt. Snow never gave anyone skin cancer.

Why is sun the embodiment/definition of ''good'' weather?

I just think valuing sunshine above most other things is a little, well, shallow.

I assume that you were one of the few who did think that Australia was paradise when you came here.

Not many actually do think like that, so you may not be telling many that they are wrong.

Most Brits that think that have never even met an Australian. They are just so good at putting down Britain they make the assumption that Aus will be better.
I had no idea about the Aussie self promotion theory until I read it on here after arriving.
Most people would couch the last line as , better climate and more space. For me that applies, for some not. It is far from the best aspects of life for me here though.
Some prefer here, some prefer the UK. These threads are circular and pointless because of this simple fact.
Have some good dummy spitting sometimes though.....:D

No, never thought it was paradise. Not even for a minute.

Sorry to disappoint.

Sun = warm :thumbup:

Who valued sunshine above most other things ? Did you ?

Most other things are pretty similar, but the weather is better, for people who don't like the cold.

Not all of us move out here for a "pathetic obsession with sunshine and big houses" as you put it.
Having said that, you might have had that "expectation" when you first came out and obviously experienced a massive disappointment.

A number of reasons but heres a couple to start with:

1) I have a 3 year old daughter who to be honest spends very little time outside getting fresh air. Sure its fun to take her out in the snow now and again but it does grate on you after a while that she can't play in the garden without 15 layers!!!!

2) I work as an on site civil engineer. Now you try standing out in this weather for 8-10 hours a day and tell me that its just "seasonal." Its criminal having people out in this weather and given I'm only 30 right now. I'd much prefer to be in a much sunnier climate in the years to come.
