Default Australia - 2 months in, supermarkets!!!!!!

So we have been in Sydney 2 months tomorrow We are LOVING it, but wouldn't be British unless I picked a few faults and had a good old moan about a few things

- Supermarkets Sorry but Coles and Woolies just don't measure up to my old Waitrose supermarket back in the UK. What I wouldn't give for some of the food we used the buy there. The choice in Coles especially is rubbish compared to UK supermarkets. And why can't they sell the booze in the supermarket with everything else instead of having to go to another store!

Without resorting to the expensive David Jones food hall how does everyone else do their monthly shop? Which is the best supermarket in Oz?

I am going to have to learn how to cook desserts especially!

I moved to Oz specifically because of the worldwide reputation of it's supermarkets and I too have been cruelly tricked.

The TV is shite too.

Christ knows how I survive, I pity the kids in developing countries struggling to find fresh water, at least they don't walk into Woolies and are confronted by substandard avocados.

And they don't have to deal with ads every 5 minutes on their LCD TV.

Lucky f'kers.

Don't rely on the supermarkets- try to find farmer's outlets and wholesale shops.
costco is opening in July if you like that sort of thing. It is in Parramatta, and I might just take a wander all the way over there to see if Costco people are like Walmart people!!!! (Not going to fork out $60 for a card tho.)

You live in Sydney don't you? How much variety and choice must there be??? I've never been but surely there's allsorts of little shops and greengrocers etc?

If I want to shop in Coles (which I am a fan of) I have to drive about 90 mins each way. My local supermarket is smaller than my old little Co-Op at home and we still eat well!

Supermarkets in Oz are crap and there is virtually zero competition. Get used to it.

Errrr no! Or onions!

On a serious note I have realised that while my supermarket here isn't extensive it has different plus factors.

1) It doesn't take me 15 mins to find a parking space
2) It doesn't take me an hour to get a pint of milk (well it does if you include driving time)
3) I generally never queue
4) I have a lovely chat (mostly) with the checkout people whilst they pack my bags for me
5) The chances are I'll bump into a neighbour and we'll have a chat for a good few minutes
6) Christmas shopping isn't the horror it used to be with siege mentality taking over so many in UK

Yup, I agree with all of that ... I don't mind the grocery shop actually, I generally get an underground park next the ramp then it's a minute walk to shop and if I time it right I avoid the kids and old fogeys

And I do like having my bags packed ... And, generally, the quality of the fresh veg is pretty good.
