Default Aussie vs Ozzie (oi, oi, oi?)

So, as I understand it ...

- Aussie is slang for an Australian

- Oz is shorthand for Australia

- Ozzie is either an ostrich or, a variation of it is married to Sharon

Sorry to disabuse you but Aus (pronounced 'Oz') is the nickname. Similarly Rosalind becomes Ros (pronounced 'Roz'). Oxford English Dictionary spelling may have been influential.

Oz is the English nickname (also pronounced 'Oz') perhaps wistfully influenced by the story 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' and film 'The Wizard of Oz'.

Ozzie is a North American personal name.

Yup, dont think you would usually find an Aussie using Oz - smacks too much of the yellow brick road (and even as a long term resident here, I find it really annoying). Go for Aus if you want to abbreviate

Christ, I had to look up "disabuse".

"The Boy From Oz" is, of course, another (Australian) example of the use of Oz to denote the country.

But, "Ozzie" isn't "Australian" here, it's "Aussie".

Not that I've conducted an exhaustive survey or, in fact, give that much of a monkey's

When I read 'Ozzie' I read 'Recently arrived or wannabe Aussie'.

Originally British owned and marketing to Britons (& presumably to Northern Irelanders also). Yellow brick road, pockets etc.

Possibly for those whose dreams are more circumscribed than the yellow brick road.
