aussie supermarkets are rubbish
Im on hols in the uk at the moment, lived in oz for 15yrs and it still amazes me how rubbish our australian supermarkets, namely coles and woolworth are compared to over in the uk....i am having a fine old time wandering around tesco and asda marvelling at the huge range of food you can get....yes a lot of it is prepackaged which i probably wouldnt buy much anyway....but there is such a HUGE selection of fruit and veg which looks so much nicer than anything in coles and there are so many varieties of cheeses, not just cheddar and red leicester!!! there is a much bigger range of organic foodstuffs and of course there is the brilliant value kids/adults clothing...It is going to be quite depressing when I get back and have to go for my weekly shop at Coles :(
well better get off to Tesco while I can....oh yeh dont need to rush they are open 24hours!!!! |

Re: aussie supermarkets are rubbish
Have defend the Aussie supermarkets. Where I live you can buy anything you desire. I do accept there is not the variety of ready meals, but who wants to buy that cr*p anyway?!

Re: aussie supermarkets are rubbish
I find the fruit and veg goes rotton more quickly here in OZ.
I have to agree though that the supermarkets in UK are much better for choice and quality. Not that i like shopping. |
Re: aussie supermarkets are rubbish
I would agree that supermarkets in the UK are better than Oz but I am finding the quality and price of fruit & veg in the local greengrocer and meat in the local butcher is much better than the UK.
It would be nice to be able to shop after work rather than having to go out at the weekend to get things as now by Thursday the fridge is looking rather bare and I'm left with the choice of paying twice the price for half the quality at Coles or going out for dinner. |
Re: aussie supermarkets are rubbish
I love supermarkets wherever I go, sad but true, a food obsessed person I am :)
Main thing I missed loads & still do is the lack of good organic food in Oz. I live in what is one of the more 'aware' areas and you can get organic stuff but its stupidly pricey and the choice is still alot less. It is changing now though, albeit slowly. Dont get me started on hydroponic chemical fed lettuce & greens |
Re: aussie supermarkets are rubbish
Welcome to the UK, where life is so exciting that everyone spends their time discussing the weather and supermarkets.
Riotous times, I tell you. Who'd live elsewhere when you can have a 4-hour conversation about Fairy Liquid any day of the week? Oh yes, it's the place to be. Dear God, take me back home to civilisation. |

Re: aussie supermarkets are rubbish
I can't really see any difference between UK supermarkets and Aussie supermarkets in terms of food other than the lack of ready meals in Aussie supermarkets. And like an earlier poster said who wants to live on that crap anyway. OK the range of items is different in an Australian supermarket compared to a British supermarket but what do people expect when you are living in another country? In terms of the freshness of produce I think that this varies hugely from store to store even within one chain. Back in the UK one of our local Tesco's always had quite good fruit and veg whereas at another local store it was never as good.

Re: aussie supermarkets are rubbish
I dont have a problem with the variety of stuff, were not junk eaters, all the basic nutritious food is here BUT what a rip off.
Todays paper, a full page colour ad for Coles, "bringing you cheaper food" yes right, they just went through all the basic stuff, repackaged it at about 30% higher for the same item. Then had the cheek to call it SMART BUY:curse: |
