Armidale - NSW
 

Hi,
Anyone know anything about Armidale, NSW?

Ive some how wangled a place on a distance learning course at UNE, but found out it has on-campus labs twice a year. (Biomedical degree)

So that means I would have to fly from WA to Armidale by myself for the next 3years.
Whats Armidale like, is it safe and ok?

The University of New England in Armidale NSW is (or was when I lived there) one of the best Uni's in Australia.

Armidale is on the Northern Tablelands of NSW in the New England area. The area is called New England because of it's climate not because of what it looks like. It has four distinct seasons and there isn't a prettier place in Australia in the autumn. It snows in the winter (just) and the summer temperature is very rarely over 30.

It's only a small city with a population of around 25,000 and the main industry is education and farming.

It's a long time since I lived there but it was as good a place as any and better than a lot for my kids to grow up in. It has the same problems any city has but being small it's not as bad as a lot of other places.

The day I drove into Armidale in the early 70's was like stepping back in time and I don't think it's changed all that much since, just a bit more modern and maybe a few more shops etc.

I left my appendix in Armidale.

My eldest son did a degree externally at UNE and we went up for his graduation - where I got caught short with appendicitis.

Armidale is nice. Reminds me of Canberra - similar climate and feel about the place. It's not like your average NSW country town due to having the Uni (plus quite a few expensive, private boarding schools) in town.

It's prosperous and thriving - has nice shops, good coffee, educated workforce etc so a good place to spend time in. It markets itself as an centre of education. The UNE campus is huge and very attractive.

And the hospital was great, too. :)

We are about an hour from Armidale, NSW there's a fair bit there and Tamworth which has all you could want is an hour away. Armidale weather is much more milder than most parts, it's always a good 8 degrees cooler there and here.

Wow lost appendix, you wont forget that graduation!

Armidale is sounding rather nice. I will stop panicking now, I havent been out of WA yet so was feeling a bit nervous.

Wendy66 what will temperatures be like in April and September?

Im living North of Perth, so havent worn a coat in nearly 3years. Will April be cold and will I need a coats, umberella etc?
